Many Disney Princess fans and fans of the 1989 animated Little Mermaid movie (or, perhaps, its lesser-known sequel) were excited to learn about the casting of Halle Bailey in the new live-action remake of Ariel the little mermaid’s story.
What’s the”Scuttlebutt” About This Movie?
Fans have not been thrilled with Disney’s live-action films as of late, however — and even though Disney Princess fans praised comedic actress Melissa McCarthy’s performance as the throaty tentacled villain Ursula (who is a squid, not an octopus, thank you very much), the heavy use of CGI and the introduction of famously-bad songs like “Scuttlebutt” led to some disappointed audience members after it premiered in theaters.
Disney has tried to ameliorate the film’s disappointing numbers with bonuses like a singalong edition of the CGI-heavy film, but the movie continued to perform less-than-admirably when it came to box office numbers (regardless of many audience members’ fairly positive reviews).
Now that the film has come to Disney+, Disney has just tooted its own movie’s horn again in a post online, claiming that the film ” is the most viewed Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since Hocus Pocus 2″ and that the Disney movie has brought in “16 million views in its first five days streaming!”
A Mermaid’s Second Chance
The Little Mermaid might have lost some ground when it came to its theatrical run this summer, but apparently, it has bounced back with its second chance in the form of the Disney+ streaming service!
Disney has described the Disney Princess movie’s time in theaters as a “strong” success, and it is true that the movie “was one of the top five highest-grossing films of the summer domestically.”
Part of Our Streaming World
However, many Disney fans felt that the movie could have seen better results than it did, so learning that the movie is bringing viewers to Disney+ in droves is certainly validating!
Disney has emphasized that its big announcement about the Little Mermaid movie’s success involves views that are calculated by dividing the film’s “total stream time” by its “runtime.”
Did you see The Little Mermaid in theaters, or did you decide to wait and watch it now on Disney+ (perhaps out of a desire to avoid volatile crowds of theater attendees, such as this violent group)?
