This Disney Magic Kingdom Area Has Been Falling Apart for 2 1/2 Years

Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom has looked rough for years, and after a two-year pause, Disney is finally addressing the situation. If you've been there recently, you might have noticed that while some of the iconic fake rocks were repainted in 2023 and look vibrant, many others remain faded and neglected.

The entrance bridge rocks received a fresh blue-gray finish, but Disney halted further work, leaving other areas to deteriorate. For over two years, guests have been left wondering if Disney cares about the appearance of Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom.

Painters Are Finally at Back After 2 1/2 Years

Painters have returned to finish work in Tomorrowland, specifically on the north side near Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe, where crews are repainting rocks that have faded over the years. The nearby rocket structures are wrapped for protection, indicating serious work rather than just touch-ups. This effort coincides with the draining of Magic Kingdom's moat for Cinderella Castle's repainting, allowing easier access to Tomorrowland.

Previously, the rocks were painted in 2016, shifting from a natural red-brown to a blue-gray color, showing signs of wear over time.

Meanwhile, significant changes are underway at Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, where the entrance marquee has been completely demolished, and the front of the attraction is being rebuilt. This marks a loss for longtime fans of Tomorrowland’s classic identity, but the updates promise to improve a ride that has long needed technological upgrades.

New Technology Finally Enters Magic Kingdom

Disney is introducing a new opening scene with Buddy, a support-bot for Space Rangers. This update signifies a major storyline refresh for the ride. The classic “Z” targets will now react and light up when hit, enhancing gameplay feedback. Updated ride vehicles will feature designs inspired by Buzz Lightyear and Star Command, along with video monitors for real-time score tracking, addressing guests' requests for competitive elements.

Handheld Blasters Change Everything

The absolute biggest upgrade is the switch to handheld blasters, which is legitimately a game-changer for this attraction. For years, guests have dealt with mounted blasters that don't aim where you think they're aiming and feel super awkward to use, especially for kids who can barely reach them properly.

The new handheld blasters offer way better aim and come with always-on lasers so you can actually see where you're shooting, two different colors per vehicle, and new lighting, sound, and vibration effects that give you feedback when you're hitting targets. Combined with the reactive targets that light up and the real-time scoring monitors, these changes transform Space Ranger Spin from a frustrating experience where you have no idea what's happening into actual engaging gameplay that feels competitive and fun.

This is the kind of upgrade that could actually make Space Ranger Spin feel relevant again compared to all the newer interactive rides that have opened at Disney and Universal over the past decade.

Why Tomorrowland Has Been Such a Mess

Recent improvements in Tomorrowland highlight years of neglect, with the half-finished rock painting project being a notable example. This section of Magic Kingdom has suffered from inconsistent theming and deferred maintenance, reflecting Disney's struggle to update it without massive costs. While the current strategy focuses on modernizing individual attractions with better technology, it falls short of the bold reimagining many fans desire. However, it does signal a renewed attention to an area that has long needed it.

When Does This All Finish at Magic Kingdom

Disney hasn't announced a reopening date for Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin or what the new entrance marquee will look like. However, construction is progressing quickly, though major refurbishments typically take several months.

When it reopens, guests can expect a significantly upgraded experience with new technology, handheld blasters, and updated vehicles, making it feel like a new attraction, especially for those who remember the frustrations of the old version.

Combined with the completion of rock painting and the Cinderella Castle refresh, Tomorrowland is finally receiving the maintenance it has long needed. After two and a half years of neglect, it’s about time Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom gets the attention it deserves.
