Disney Removes a Longstanding Tomorrowland Icon Inside Magic Kingdom

Tomorrowland has always been one of the most recognizable lands in Magic Kingdom, packed with bright colors, futuristic design, and classic attractions that have been part of Walt Disney World for generations. But right now, guests walking through the land are noticing something missing — and it’s not a small detail.

Disney has officially removed a longtime Tomorrowland icon: the entrance marquee outside Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

For years, the marquee helped define the attraction’s presence in Tomorrowland. Even guests who weren’t planning to ride could spot it instantly while walking through the land. It was one of those familiar features that blended into the scenery so well that most people didn’t realize how much it mattered until it was suddenly gone.

Now, the entrance area looks completely different.

Reports indicate that after construction walls were installed and later removed, the historic marquee was taken down entirely. Soon after, crews began tearing up the pavement in front of the attraction, which makes it clear Disney is rebuilding more than just a sign. Infrastructure work is already underway, likely setting the foundation for a brand-new marquee installation.

This demolition is part of a larger refurbishment for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, which is currently closed for upgrades. And based on the details Disney has already shared, the attraction is expected to feel dramatically different when it reopens.

One of the biggest updates will be a new opening scene featuring a brand-new character named Buddy. Disney describes Buddy as a support-bot who helps prepare Space Rangers before they launch into their mission.

The attraction’s targets are also getting a much-needed update. The old static “Z” targets will now react and light up when hit, which could make the ride far more satisfying for guests who take the scoring seriously.

Disney is also introducing redesigned ride vehicles inspired by Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. Each updated Star Cruiser will include video monitors for real-time scoring, making it easier for guests to follow their progress throughout the ride.

On top of that, Disney is adding handheld blasters, which is likely to be one of the most popular improvements. These new blasters will feature always-on lasers, updated effects, and improved accuracy — a major upgrade from the mounted blasters that have frustrated guests for years.

While some fans may feel sad seeing a familiar Tomorrowland feature removed, the updates coming to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin suggest Disney is trying to modernize the attraction in a big way.

For better or worse, this demolition confirms one thing: Magic Kingdom is entering another era of transformation, and Tomorrowland is officially part of that story.
