If you were hoping to spend your Disneyland afternoon hanging out with Mickey, grabbing a bite at Café Daisy, or hopping aboard Runaway Railway… things might not have gone as planned.
On Friday, May 2nd, Disneyland guests were surprised by a sudden and complete shutdown of Mickey’s Toontown after a power outage hit the land in the early afternoon. Attractions went offline, stores shuttered, and food service stopped completely. And yes—Mickey’s house was dark, too.
Total Toontown Takeover… by Darkness
The power glitch didn’t just affect one ride—it knocked out the whole land. Both Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin went down, and shortly afterward, Cast Members began escorting guests out of the land entirely. No character meet-and-greets. No snacks. No shopping.
And if you’ve been to Disneyland lately, you know Toontown is buzzing with families, fans, and those famous picnic spots. So when the lights go out here, it’s a big deal.
Theme Park IQ shared, “Cast Members are currently leading guests away from Toon Town at Disneyland letting them know that all attractions are currently closed.
Unsure what happened and nobody will tell me!”

They then confirmed it was a power outage.
What Shuts Down When Toontown Closes?
A lot more than you might expect. Besides the two main attractions, this colorful cartoon land is home to:
-
Café Daisy – a quick-service favorite that usually serves up hot dogs, cheesy pizza flop-overs, and those colorful drinks we all love photographing
-
Good Boy! Grocers – where you can grab snack packs and drinks on the go
-
EngineEar Souvenirs – the official Runaway Railway exit shop packed with plushes, ears, and ride-specific merch
All of it: closed.
And of course, if you were hoping to catch Mickey or Minnie for a photo, their meet-and-greet locations were unavailable during the outage.
What Caused the Blackout?
Disney hasn’t officially commented yet, but Cast Members told guests the issue stemmed from a power disruption, likely affecting ride safety systems and operational tech. And when safety’s involved, Disney plays it safe—as they should. That means a full land evacuation until things are running smoothly again.
When Did Toontown Reopen?
Thankfully, Toontown didn’t stay down for long. By late afternoon, the power had been restored, and Cast Members slowly began letting guests back in. Rides came back online, Mobile Order reopened, and characters returned to their usual meet-and-greet spots.
No major delays have been reported since then, and everything appears to be operating normally today.
Why This Matters for Disney Fans
If Toontown closes, it doesn’t just impact ride lovers—it can also throw a wrench into your carefully planned snack stops. Café Daisy, for example, is one of the few quick-service spots near Fantasyland with shaded seating and family-friendly fare, and it often books up early for Mobile Order. When that’s suddenly unavailable, it sends ripple effects through the rest of the park as guests scramble for alternatives.
So if you’re headed to Disneyland soon, keep this in mind: even the most magical places can run into real-world problems. And if you’re planning to dine or snack in Toontown, it’s smart to have a backup plan just in case.
We’ll keep you posted if Disneyland releases an official statement—but for now, everything’s back up and running in Mickey’s neighborhood.
Nearly the same thing happened at the Tron ride in Magic Kingdom due to a technical issue, Space Mountain was affected too. Few years back was the TTA aka WedWay People Mover. I couldn’t use any of those rides & passed’em up to go on others. Now with The Hall Of Presidents off for now. Hope it comes back later maybe after summer & brings back the people other than myself for the long-awaiting american history lesson we so endure & educational to learn.
