Universal Confirms Rare Free Holiday Perk This December, but Most Guests Won’t Get In

Universal Studios Hollywood is giving certain guests a chance to enjoy its Christmas celebrations after the park closes this December, and they won't have to pay extra for the experience.

The Southern California theme park is preparing for another holiday season filled with festive decorations, returning entertainment, and special character appearances. But Universal has also confirmed an exclusive event that will let some visitors stay inside the park long after regular operations end.

The celebration will take place on two nights, offering four hours of holiday fun without requiring a separate event ticket.

However, there's a catch that could leave plenty of interested guests on the outside looking in. Even those who qualify won't automatically receive admission.

Universal Announces Exclusive Holiday Event for December

Universal Studios Hollywood will host its Pass Member Holiday Park Takeover on December 1 and 2, 2026.

The special event runs from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. on both evenings, giving eligible visitors exclusive access to the theme park during the holiday season.

The takeover falls during Universal Studios Hollywood's Christmas celebration, which begins November 21, 2026, and continues through January 3, 2027.

This year, Universal is introducing Illumination's Merry Minions, a new seasonal experience featuring the popular animated characters.

Guests can also look forward to the return of Grinchmas, which brings Dr. Seuss' famous green Christmas character into the festivities.

Meanwhile, Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will once again fill the themed land with holiday decorations and seasonal entertainment.

SUPER NINTENDO WORLD is joining the celebration, too, with festive decorations and special character encounters.

Although the takeover offers a different way to experience the park, Universal hasn't confirmed that every attraction and holiday offering will be available throughout the entire four-hour event.

Universal Is Bringing Back a Previous Holiday Experience

While this year's announcement gives Pass Members another reason to celebrate, the idea isn't entirely new.

Universal Studios Hollywood previously hosted a Pass Member Holiday Park Takeover on November 28 and 29, 2023.

Like the upcoming event, that celebration welcomed eligible guests from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., offering an opportunity to enjoy the park outside its usual operating hours.

Now, three years later, Universal is bringing back the experience as part of its 2026 Christmas festivities.

The December dates also allow participants to enjoy the seasonal atmosphere before the busiest stretch of holiday travel arrives.

However, guests hoping to attend shouldn't assume they can simply show up when the event begins.

Universal has established specific admission requirements, and missing one important step could mean missing the celebration altogether.

The Free Admission Comes With a Major Catch

Despite the complimentary admission, Universal Studios Hollywood isn't opening this event to everyone.

Only guests with a valid Universal Studios Hollywood Annual Pass or Season Pass can participate in the December takeover.

Visitors holding regular theme park tickets won't qualify for the exclusive evening access.

But even Pass Members have another requirement to meet.

Universal is limiting attendance and requiring reservations for both nights. That means holding an eligible pass doesn't guarantee someone a spot.

Reservations open after 11 a.m. on November 4, 2026, through Universal's official Pass Member website.

Guests who successfully reserve a place and present their valid pass can attend without purchasing an additional event ticket.

However, once reservations reach capacity, other eligible Pass Members may be unable to participate.

Anyone interested in attending should prepare to register when reservations become available rather than waiting until December.

Christmas Festivities Will Continue for Everyone Else

Fortunately, missing the exclusive takeover doesn't mean missing Universal's Christmas celebration altogether.

Regular park guests can still experience seasonal entertainment, festive character appearances, holiday food and beverages, and special merchandise throughout the celebration.

Universal CityWalk Hollywood will also participate with Christmas decorations, a holiday tree, seasonal dining options, and festive merchandise.

These experiences give visitors other ways to celebrate without attending the Pass Member-only event.

And because Universal's holiday season continues through January 3, 2027, guests will have several weeks to enjoy the festivities.

For qualifying Pass Members, though, December 1 and 2 offer something different: four hours of exclusive evening access without an additional admission charge.

The important thing to remember is that eligibility alone isn't enough. Guests need both a valid pass and a confirmed reservation to take advantage of Universal's complimentary holiday takeover.
