Getting onto Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure without a long wait can feel like hitting the Universal Orlando jackpot.
The Islands of Adventure coaster continues to attract plenty of guests, and Universal made a major adjustment to its queue last month by removing regular Express access. That seemingly left the standby as the main option for visitors hoping to ride.
But there’s an interesting exception.
A small number of guests can still find themselves walking into Hagrid’s Express queue. Unlike before, though, money alone won’t get you there.
Hagrid’s Remains an Islands of Adventure Favorite
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure has been thrilling guests since it opened at Islands of Adventure in 2019.
The attraction sits inside The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade and takes riders on a journey through the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid.
Guests choose between sitting on the motorbike or in the sidecar before embarking on an experience that blends coaster thrills with Wizarding World storytelling.
Multiple launches keep the ride moving, while indoor and outdoor sections add variety. Magical creatures and unexpected movements also help make the attraction different from a standard roller coaster.
That combination has kept Hagrid’s incredibly popular years after its debut. Unfortunately, that popularity can also translate into substantial waits.

Universal Made a Major Express Change in July
For a period, Universal Express offered guests another option.
Eligible visitors could use Express at Hagrid’s instead of relying exclusively on its regular standby queue. Universal eventually decided to change that setup.
On July 1, 2026, Hagrid’s stopped participating in the regular Universal Express program.
The change came as Universal worked to improve the attraction's flow. Express had reportedly contributed to longer standby waits and additional congestion.
Since then, purchasing Universal Express hasn’t guaranteed expedited access to Hagrid’s. Guests using Express at other participating attractions still have to approach this coaster differently.
However, Universal didn’t eliminate every opportunity to enter its Express queue.

Hagrid’s Express Access Has an Unusual Exception
This is where the current situation gets interesting.
Hagrid’s has not returned to Universal’s normal Express lineup. Guests shouldn’t buy Express expecting to scan in and skip part of Hagrid’s standby queue.
Instead, Universal Team Members can give select visitors single-use Express passes that work at Hagrid’s.
These passes create a limited form of Express access that differs considerably from the previous system. Rather than being a standard benefit guests can purchase, they can be handed out as special surprises.
In other words, part of the Express experience remains available at Hagrid’s, but only for certain guests. Everyone else should still expect to use standby.
One couple recently discovered just how valuable that surprise can be.

Two Guests Receive an Unexpected Express Pass
A Reddit user shared an experience that began after riding the Hogwarts Express from Universal Studios Florida to Islands of Adventure.
The guest wrote:
“we got off the hogwarts express from Universal Studios to Islands of Adventure, and my gf and I were just trying to make the Harry Potter and the forbidden journey. But right when we got off an employee came up to us and gave us two tickets for an express pass for Hagrid’s Motor Bike adventure! We quickly rushed over and they took us on the express pass line and we got on the ride in less than 20 minutes.”
The guest later said, “Definitely felt like a magical moment.”
Universal Team Members occasionally offer unexpected surprises that can brighten a guest’s day. For these visitors, that meant experiencing one of Universal Orlando’s most popular attractions with a reported wait of less than 20 minutes.
Guests shouldn’t expect this to happen during every visit, though. The passes appear to be limited surprises distributed at the team members’ discretion.
Regular Express Could Still Return Someday
Whether Universal eventually puts Hagrid’s back into its standard Express program remains unknown.
There is already precedent for Universal adding Express to an extremely popular coaster later in its lifespan. Jurassic World VelociCoaster operated without Express for years before eventually receiving it.
Hagrid’s could potentially follow a similar path if its wait times become more manageable.
Universal could also consider another system. A single-attraction Express purchase with an assigned return window could limit the number of people entering the Express queue at once. That would share some similarities with Disney World’s Lightning Lane approach.
Of course, Universal hasn’t announced plans for either option.

A Little Luck Can Still Beat Hagrid’s Standby Line
For most Islands of Adventure guests, nothing has changed. Hagrid’s remains outside the standard Universal Express lineup, and standby remains the normal way to ride.
The Express queue, however, isn’t completely inaccessible.
Universal can give select guests single-use passes that provide expedited entry to Hagrid’s. It’s far more limited than the Express access available before July 1, but it means some visitors can still get a major shortcut.
You just can’t buy your way into it.
