A visit to Hogwarts usually begins long before guests board an enchanted bench. It starts beneath the castle’s towering silhouette, continues through its corridors and classrooms, and culminates in a frantic flight alongside Harry Potter and his friends.
For nearly two weeks in 2027, however, that journey will be missing from Universal Orlando Resort.
Universal’s official operating calendar currently lists Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey as temporarily closed from February 8 through February 19, 2027. If the schedule holds, the attraction will be unavailable for 12 consecutive calendar days at Universal Islands of Adventure.
That is not a resort-wide Wizarding World closure. Hogsmeade itself is not listed as closing, and Universal has not announced the removal or replacement of Forbidden Journey. Still, guests whose vacations fall entirely within those dates will miss the signature ride housed inside Hogwarts Castle.
Universal Orlando Has Not Explained the Harry Potter Closure
Universal places Forbidden Journey under the “Temporary Closures” section of its park-hours webpage. The company has not publicly detailed what work is scheduled, nor does the listing call the interruption a refurbishment.
That distinction matters. A planned closure can involve inspections, preventive maintenance, technical work, cosmetic attention, or several tasks at once. Without an explanation from Universal, claims of new scenes, upgraded projections, altered ride vehicles, or connections to HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” television series would be speculation.
The calendar also does not expressly say that the ride will reopen February 20. That is the first date outside the listed closure window, but guests should not treat it as a guaranteed reopening date unless Universal provides additional confirmation. Its calendar warns that dates are subject to change.
For travelers, the safest approach is simple: assume Forbidden Journey will not operate at any point from February 8 through February 19 and check the official calendar and Universal Orlando app again shortly before visiting.
What Islands of Adventure Guests Will Experience Differently
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey combines physical sets, filmed sequences, robotic ride technology, and practical creatures in a trip through and around Hogwarts. Its location is part of its appeal: the castle is not merely scenery behind the attraction—it houses the experience.
Closing the ride therefore removes more than one item from a checklist. It eliminates the principal moving attraction inside Hogwarts and disrupts the familiar progression of entering Hogsmeade, approaching the castle, and flying through the Wizarding World.
The temporary closure follows another maintenance interruption documented in November 2025. Inside the Magic subsequently examined guest concerns about the attraction following that work, but Universal has not connected the previous downtime to the 2027 closure.
The new shutdown should also be separated from the exterior Hogwarts project seen in 2026. That work placed scaffolding and scrims around portions of the castle while Forbidden Journey continued operating. By June, Inside the Magic reported that Hogwarts Castle had reemerged from that refurbishment.
Universal has offered no evidence that the February 2027 closure is an extension of that exterior work.
Hogsmeade Will Still Offer Other Harry Potter Experiences
Guests visiting during the closure will not lose the entire Hogsmeade experience. Universal currently promotes Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Flight of the Hippogriff, the Hogwarts Express, shops, dining, and entertainment within the land.
Those attractions do not provide a direct substitute for Forbidden Journey. Hagrid’s is a high-speed roller coaster through the Forbidden Forest, while Universal describes Flight of the Hippogriff as a family-friendly coaster. The Hogwarts Express requires Park-to-Park admission to travel between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida.
The closure may be especially important to families planning around rider requirements. Forbidden Journey requires guests to be at least 48 inches tall, while Flight of the Hippogriff has a lower 36-inch minimum, subject to Universal’s accompanying-adult rules.
Visitors could also devote additional time to Diagon Alley or the newer Ministry of Magic experience at Epic Universe, provided their tickets include those separately gated parks. But that requires the right admission and potentially another day—not merely walking to a replacement attraction inside Islands of Adventure.
Forbidden Journey helped define the original Wizarding World when Hogsmeade opened in 2010. Inside the Magic’s contemporary review of the attraction captured how unusual its mixture of simulator, dark-ride, and thrill-ride elements felt at the time.
Its temporary absence will not close Hogwarts from view or empty Hogsmeade of magic. It will, however, remove the experience at the center of the castle—and for guests visiting only during that 12-day window, rescheduling may be the only way to ride.
