Universal Moves Forward With Islands of Adventure Replacement After 27 Years

Universal Orlando Resort continues to make moves inside one of the oldest areas of Islands of Adventure, but guests are still waiting for the announcement that explains exactly what is happening.

Lost Continent has been part of the theme park since Islands of Adventure opened in 1999. Now, 27 years later, the original land is gradually disappearing as demolition and construction activity continue.

And while Pokémon remains heavily rumored as its eventual replacement, Universal still hasn't made anything official.

Lost Continent Continues to Disappear

Lost Continent once featured several attractions surrounded by elaborate environments inspired by mythology. Over time, however, the land became a shell of what guests experienced during the park's early years.

Poseidon's Fury permanently closed in 2023, removing one of the land's biggest remaining attractions. Meanwhile, construction walls and demolition activity have appeared around the former Sinbad stunt theater.

The changes have made it increasingly clear that Universal has plans for this valuable section of Islands of Adventure.

Still, October 2026 has arrived without an announcement.

Universal hasn't revealed a replacement, construction timeline, attraction lineup, or opening date.

Pokémon Remains the Big Rumor

Pokémon continues to dominate speculation about what could replace Lost Continent.

Universal Destinations & Experiences previously announced a global partnership with The Pokémon Company, fueling expectations that the franchise will eventually receive a substantial presence at Universal's theme parks.

Lost Continent has emerged as a rumored Orlando location.

The land sits between Seuss Landing and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. Its full footprint reportedly covers roughly eight acres, potentially providing enough space for multiple attractions, restaurants, shops, and detailed Pokémon environments.

Rumored attraction concepts have included an Omnimover-style Pokémon Snap dark ride and a family-friendly roller coaster. Universal hasn't confirmed either project.

Universal Is Keeping Its Plans Secret

That's what makes the situation so unusual.

Universal isn't waiting to make physical changes. Guests can already see Lost Continent changing, even though the company hasn't publicly explained what those changes will ultimately produce.

A Pokémon replacement would also represent another major shift for Islands of Adventure.

Lost Continent is one of the park's original concepts, dating back to opening day in 1999. Replacing it would remove another piece of the park's early identity while giving Universal an opportunity to introduce one of the world's largest entertainment franchises.

For now, however, Pokémon remains a rumor.

After 27 years, Lost Continent's future looks increasingly bleak. Universal is moving forward with changes inside the land.

Everyone else is still waiting to find out what comes next.
