Universal Schedules New ‘Harry Potter’ Closure Sooner Than Expected

If you've got a Universal Orlando trip planned in the next few months, you need to read this because there are some closures happening that could totally mess with your plans if you don't know about them ahead of time.

Epic Universe has basically turned Universal Orlando into an absolute madhouse right now. In the best way possible, obviously, because the park is INCREDIBLE and everyone wants to see it. But here's what's happening: people aren't just going to Epic Universe anymore.

They're doing full Universal vacations now, hitting all three parks, staying at the resort hotels, the whole thing. Universal went from being that park you squeeze in for a day during your Disney trip to being a legit week-long destination that competes directly with Disney World.

Wild how one park opening can change everything, right? But with all these extra people flooding through Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida, attractions are getting way more wear and tear than they used to. More guests means more rides, more foot traffic, more everything.

So Universal's been scheduling maintenance and refurbishments to keep things running smoothly, which makes total sense. Nobody wants to ride something that's falling apart or looks crusty because it hasn't been updated in forever. The problem is, when they close stuff for refurbishment, it affects people's vacation plans. Especially if you're traveling from across the country or internationally and can't just reschedule easily.

So here's what's closing and when you need to worry about it.

Me Ship, The Olive Is Closing for a Week in April

From April 19th through April 25th, Me Ship, The Olive is shutting down for maintenance. If you have no idea what that is, don't worry, you're not alone. It's not exactly the most famous attraction at Universal.

Me Ship, The Olive is that big Popeye-themed ship play area in Toon Lagoon. It's got three decks with all these interactive things like climbing nets, slides, passageways, horns you can honk, an interactive piano, basically a giant playground designed to look like Popeye's ship. Little kids absolutely love it because they can just run around and explore and burn energy while parents take a breather.

But here's the cool part that makes it more than just a playground: the ship has water cannons. And those water cannons let you absolutely DRENCH people riding Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges, the water raft ride right next to it. So you can stand on the ship and spray random strangers floating by, which is honestly hilarious and way more fun than it sounds.

The closure is only one week, so it's not a huge deal unless you're specifically visiting during April 19-25 and your kids were really looking forward to the ship. The raft ride itself will still be operating, but nobody will be shooting water cannons from the ship during that time.

Universal hasn't said they're changing anything about the attraction, so it's probably just routine maintenance. They'll clean it, fix whatever needs fixing, make sure everything's safe, and reopen it on April 26th exactly like it was before.

Ollivander's Wand Shop Is Closing and We Don't Know When It's Reopening

This is the bigger one. Starting February 26th, Ollivander's Wand Shop in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure is closing for refurbishment. And here's the kicker: Universal hasn't announced when it's reopening.

No reopening date usually means one of two things. Either the refurbishment is pretty extensive and they genuinely don't know how long it'll take, or they're being flexible with timing to make sure everything's perfect before they reopen. Either way, if you're visiting Islands of Adventure after February 26th, you're not getting the Ollivander's experience there.

For those who don't know, Ollivander's is one of the coolest parts of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It recreates that scene from the first movie where Harry goes to buy his wand and the wandmaker helps him find the right one. You go into this small, cluttered room that looks exactly like the shop from the films, and one lucky person from the group gets chosen to participate in the wand ceremony. They try a few wands, there are special effects, dramatic lighting, the whole theatrical thing, and eventually a wand “chooses” them. It's genuinely magical if you're a Harry Potter fan.

Now here's the important part: there are TWO Ollivander's locations at Universal Orlando. One in Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure (the one that's closing), and one in Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida (which is staying open). So you can still do the Ollivander's experience, you just have to go to the Studios park instead of Islands of Adventure.

You can also still buy wands in Hogsmeade even while Ollivander's is closed. There are other shops in the area that sell them. You just won't get the theatrical wand-choosing ceremony at that location.

Oh Yeah, and Jurassic Park River Adventure Is Closed Until NOVEMBER

If you haven't been following Universal news, this might come as a surprise: Jurassic Park River Adventure has been closed and won't reopen until November 19th. That's a LONG time for a major attraction to be down.

This is one of the original Islands of Adventure rides from when the park opened in 1999. You float through scenes with animatronic dinosaurs, everything seems fine, then obviously it all goes wrong and you end up getting chased by a T-Rex before plunging down a massive water drop. Classic stuff.

The fact that it's closed until November suggests they're doing major work on it. We're talking infrastructure updates, mechanical systems, maybe refreshing the dinosaur animatronics, potentially a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff that's necessary after 25+ years of operation. Universal hasn't given details about what exactly they're doing, but closures this long usually mean significant improvements rather than basic maintenance.

Hogwarts Express Reopens Soon Though!

One piece of good news: the Hogwarts Express is scheduled to reopen February 23rd. It's been down for refurbishment but should be back soon.

For those unfamiliar, the Hogwarts Express is the train that connects Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure with Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida. You need a park-to-park ticket to ride it, and it's both transportation and an attraction. The windows show different scenes depending on which direction you're traveling, so you get unique experiences going each way.

What This All Means for Your Trip

If you're visiting Universal Orlando in the next few months, here's what you need to know:

April 19-25: Me Ship, The Olive is closed. Not a huge deal unless your kids specifically love it.

February 26th onward (no return date): Ollivander's at Islands of Adventure is closed. Go to the one at Universal Studios Florida instead for the same experience.

Through November 19th: Jurassic Park River Adventure is closed. This is a bigger loss since it's a major attraction with no alternative location.

Through February 23rd: Hogwarts Express is closed, but it should be back soon.

The good news is that even with these closures, Universal Orlando still has a TON to do. Epic Universe alone could fill multiple days, and Islands of Adventure and Studios both have plenty of operating attractions. You're not going to run out of things to experience.

The Ollivander's situation is probably the most annoying for Harry Potter fans who specifically wanted the Islands of Adventure version, but honestly, the Studios location is identical. Same experience, different building. You're not missing anything content-wise.

Jurassic Park River Adventure being closed until November is the biggest impact for most people since there's no alternative, but Universal's got enough other rides that you can still have an amazing trip without it.

Here's What You Should Actually Do

Before your trip, check Universal Orlando's official website for the latest operating schedules. Seriously, just do it. Things change, reopening dates get announced, new closures pop up, and you don't want to plan your entire day around something that's closed.

If Ollivander's at Islands of Adventure is a must-do for you, either visit before February 26th or just go to the Studios location. Problem solved.

If your kids are obsessed with the Popeye ship, avoid April 19-25. If they don't care, it doesn't matter.

If you absolutely need to ride Jurassic Park River Adventure, you're waiting until November or later. But realistically, with Velocicoaster, Hagrid's Motorbike Adventure, Spider-Man, Hulk, and everything else at Islands of Adventure, you'll survive without the dinosaur water ride.

And honestly, sometimes visiting during refurbishment periods works in your favor because some people avoid those dates specifically because their favorite attractions are closed, which can mean lower crowds overall.

Have you dealt with closures during your Universal trips? Drop a comment and let everyone know how you handled it, because honestly, hearing from people who've been there is way more helpful than just reading corporate announcements. And if this saved you from showing up to a closed Ollivander's, share it with your Harry Potter-obsessed friends so they don't make the same mistake.
