While some WDW fans consider it blasphemous to venture off-property, many tourists love exploring the Orlando area. This includes enjoying other popular theme parks such as Sea World, Busch Gardens, and (the biggest Disney competitor) Universal. Back in the day, Universal finally committed to opening their own park, once Disney began construction on Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM). Themed to celebrate various blockbusters and feature the latest and greatest ride technology, Universal Studios Orlando opened its gates in 1990. Although the early days were bumpy, Universal has expanded their presence since and the original park continues to be a guest favorite.
