A Halloween Horror Nights character can go from entertaining a handful of guests to being surrounded by a massive crowd within minutes. Universal learned just how difficult that attention can become when Art the Clown roamed Universal Orlando last year.
Some guests reportedly went far beyond taking photos or enjoying the interaction. Touching, grabbing, chasing, and other behaviors created concerns about the performer behind the character.
Now, Halloween Horror Nights 2026 is underway, and Universal appears to be keeping tighter control over some of its most popular performers on both coasts.
Art remains a major draw in Orlando, while Nikki from Obsession (2026) is attracting attention at Universal Studios Hollywood. Their appearances differ, but both illustrate the challenges Universal faces when a character becomes incredibly popular.
Art's Popularity Came With a Problem
Art the Clown quickly became a Halloween Horror Nights favorite at Universal Orlando in 2025.
Guests could encounter him while moving around the park, and large groups sometimes gathered around the performer. Unfortunately, not everyone respected the boundaries of the interaction.
Reports and videos indicated that guests touched or grabbed Art. Others reportedly chased or cornered the performer while he attempted to move through the park.
There were also reports of people shining lights directly into his face.
The problems reportedly extended to Art's props. Some guests interfered with them, while others allegedly attempted to take them.
Those interactions created an obvious challenge. Universal wanted guests to enjoy an unpredictable encounter with a character without letting the excitement surrounding Art put the performer in a potentially unsafe position.
Another Popular Character Arrives in Hollywood
That challenge has carried into 2026, although the attention now stretches beyond Orlando.
Universal Studios Hollywood announced Nikki from Obsession (2026) as a roaming character for this year's Halloween Horror Nights.
Fans immediately showed interest, but some also wondered how guests would behave around the performer.
Those concerns became especially relevant after what reportedly happened with Art in Orlando last year. While Nikki isn't appearing at Universal Orlando, the possibility of another popular character becoming overwhelmed by crowds created similar questions in Hollywood.
Universal appears prepared to keep a closer eye on those interactions.
Security Isn't Far Away
Videos shared by Halloween Horror Nights guests this year show security staying very close to certain performers.
That proximity allows security personnel to respond quickly if an interaction becomes inappropriate or potentially unsafe.
It also creates a more obvious boundary for guests.
Halloween Horror Nights depends on close encounters. Having a scare actor suddenly appear nearby is completely different from watching a character from across the park.
But close interaction doesn't give guests permission to touch, grab, chase, or interfere with performers.
And security isn't the only way some encounters appear more controlled.
Nikki's Appearances Show Another Approach
At Universal Studios Hollywood, several videos show Nikki separated from guests by a rope or barrier during certain appearances.
That setup isn't used for every interaction, but it prevents crowds from immediately surrounding the performer in some situations. Security can also be seen remaining nearby during many appearances.
Art's 2026 Orlando role looks different from his roaming appearances last year.
This time, Art appears as part of Downtown Clowntown. That gives Universal a more structured location for one of Halloween Horror Nights' most recognizable characters.
Universal hasn't announced one companywide policy governing roaming scare actors. Orlando and Hollywood also don't necessarily follow identical procedures.
Still, both situations suggest Universal is paying close attention to how guests interact with high-demand performers.

Halloween Horror Nights offers much more than its roaming characters.
Five haunted houses appear at both Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood in 2026: Stranger Things 5, Sinners, Hellraiser, Evil Dead Burn, and Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness.
Orlando's exclusive houses include Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control, INVASION: Alien Abduction, H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!, MADLANDS: Caged Cannibals, and Cybergoria.
Hollywood has three exclusives: Killer Klowns From Outer Space, KILLceañera: Music by SLASH, and Dead, Deader, Deadest.
Art also stars in Hollywood's Terror Tram while appearing in Downtown Clowntown in Orlando. Nikki remains specific to Universal Studios Hollywood.
Universal Appears Ready to Intervene
Halloween Horror Nights wants its monsters to make guests uncomfortable. That doesn't mean performers should have to deal with harassment themselves.
What happened around Art last year showed how quickly a popular character can attract difficult-to-control crowds.
In 2026, visible security, barriers during certain interactions, and more structured appearances suggest Universal is taking performer safety seriously.
Guests can still get close to the action. They simply can't expect Universal to ignore inappropriate behavior when excitement crosses the line.
