Upcoming ‘Jurassic’ Film Has the Same Plot as 1993 Classic, but It’s Not Related

A new dinosaur-themed movie is making headlines—but not necessarily for the right reasons.

Recently announced by DeadlineJurassic: Reborn, an indie action-horror film unrelated to the actual Jurassic franchise, is set to hit limited theaters and digital platforms on June 24. It stars Daniel Baldwin, Bryan Scamman, Danielle Titus, and Esmeree Sterling, and follows a group of scientists who must stop a breed of genetically engineered dinosaurs from escaping a remote island and reaching the mainland. Yes, you read that right.

It’s a plot fans of the Jurassic franchise have seen before—and that’s part of the problem.

Jurassic: Reborn is obviously cashing in on Universal’s landmark series, especially with Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) arriving just days later on July 2. While it’s not uncommon for independent films to explore similar themes, the parallels here are hard to ignore.

Jurassic World Rebirth is positioned as the next major installment in the multi-billion-dollar franchise and is expected to devour some pretty big numbers at the box office. And while there’s no release date for the next official Jurassic sequel, the film will be followed sometime after by “Jurassic Park: Survival,” a first-person action-adventure video game set directly after the events of the original 1993 film.

Other upcoming dinosaur projects such as Primitive War (2025) and Flowervale Street (2026) will continue to add more dino content to the wider genre.

While Jurassic: Reborn may find an audience thanks to its release timing and genre appeal, it’s unlikely to reach anywhere near the same level of cultural impact or financial success. With Jurassic World Rebirth on the horizon and the official Jurassic name continuing to draw interest worldwide, audiences may be more inclined to stick with the original.
