Piece of Walt Disney History Erased From Disneyland

After nearly 62 years of operation, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room is about to undergo some significant changes. Set to close for a months-long refurbishment starting on April 28, 2025, the Disneyland Park attraction will see major updates for the first time in decades.

The Enchanted Tiki Room is a pioneering piece of Disney history, having been the first attraction to feature audio-animatronics when it opened in 1963. Originally intended as a dinner show, its central “magic fountain” still holds a compartment from when it was originally conceived as a coffee station. It quickly became a hit, offering visitors an unforgettable experience and featuring a catchy song that became iconic over the years.

Though some guests might now find the “tiki tiki tiki tiki room” a bit grating, the attraction remains an essential part of Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, and Tokyo Disneyland. (The Tokyo version has since been updated to The Enchanted Tiki Room: Stitch Presents Aloha e Komo Mai!.)

The Adventureland attraction doesn’t draw the crowds it once did, but it still holds a special place in the hearts of many. As Disneyland Resort gears up for its 70th anniversary, it’s clear that Walt Disney Imagineers haven’t forgotten about this beloved attraction.

The refurbishment, scheduled to begin in April 2025, will focus on repairing the decades-old technology and giving the attraction some much-needed love. According to a new report, the Tangaroa Tree, an iconic animatronic outside the Tiki Room, will undergo a complete rebuild after years of disrepair.

The carved face of the Tangaroa Tree was once a central part of the experience, telling stories to guests as its branches bloomed before their eyes. Unfortunately, it hasn’t worked properly for several years.

The Tangaroa Tree has already been digitally scanned to ensure it can be rebuilt as closely to the original design as possible. Work likely won’t begin until the attraction closes on April 28, 2025.

Disneyland Resort has yet to announce an exact date for the attraction’s reopening. However, the official word is that the Enchanted Tiki Room will return in “late summer” 2025.
