Whispers of a ‘Pirates 6’ WITH Johnny Depp — Here’s What We Know!

It’s hard to believe, but nearly eight years have passed since Johnny Depp last swashbuckled onto the big screen as the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s beloved Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The first film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), introduced fans to a world of adventure, pirate lore, and unforgettable characters.

With a perfect blend of action, comedy, and pure escapism, it was a blockbuster hit, setting the stage for a thrilling franchise.

The first three films—The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Dead Man's Chest (2006), and At World's End (2007)—were massive successes. Audiences couldn’t get enough of Depp’s quirky, unpredictable Captain Jack. Although the last two installments, On Stranger Tides (2011) and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), didn’t perform quite as well at the box office, they still attracted loyal fans eager for more pirate adventures.

Despite the dip in box office returns, Disney remained determined to continue the Pirates saga with a sixth film. But everything changed in 2018 when Johnny Depp’s personal life became the subject of intense media scrutiny.

That year, Amber Heard, Depp’s ex-wife, published an op-ed in The Washington Post, accusing him of physical, verbal, and sexual abuse. The allegations sparked a whirlwind of backlash, which ultimately led to Depp being dropped by Disney, as well as by Warner Bros., where he was recast as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts series.

In the years that followed, Depp found himself embroiled in a highly publicized defamation lawsuit. In 2022, he filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard, who countersued for $100 million.

During the trial, Depp revealed that being cut from Pirates of the Caribbean 6 had cost him over $20 million.

The jury ultimately sided with Depp, awarding him more than $10 million in damages while Heard was awarded $1 million. But perhaps one of the most striking moments from the trial was Depp’s response to a question about ever working with Disney again.

When asked if he would return to the Pirates franchise, Depp famously declared he wouldn’t, even if Disney offered him $300 million and “one million alpacas.”

Since the trial, Depp has stayed out of the limelight, but speculation has continued to swirl about his potential return to the Pirates universe. While Depp’s future with Disney remained uncertain, some glimmers of hope emerged for fans.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that multiple scripts for Pirates 6 had been written, one of which was reportedly tailored for Depp to return as the fan-favorite Captain Jack Sparrow. This, of course, reignited hope for many who still long to see Depp back on the high seas.

Now, in a new report that has fans buzzing, The DisInsider has shared details suggesting that Depp’s return to Pirates of the Caribbean might not be as far-fetched as once thought.

According to The DisInsider, Disney is quietly preparing to move forward with Pirates 6 — and Johnny Depp is in the plans. The report states:

Now, one source tells us that Walt Disney Studios is quietly gearing up to begin production on the next installment of the series at one Hollywood sound stage. Although there is no timeline for when production will officially begin, we have heard that this entry will feature the return of Depp!

While the report has fans celebrating, Disney has yet to confirm anything, which is entirely in line with the studio’s usual secrecy.

If they take a page out of the Marvel playbook, Disney might keep all details under wraps until production officially kicks off. It’s likely we won’t hear anything official until contracts are signed, and cameras start rolling.

But regardless of the official word from Disney, the news has created a palpable sense of excitement. Fans are eager to see Depp return to the role that helped define his career and made Pirates of the Caribbean a cultural phenomenon.

But the question on everyone’s mind remains: should Johnny Depp return to Pirates of the Caribbean? Or is it time for Disney to close the chapter and leave the franchise at five films?

While some fans are enthusiastic about the idea of Depp reprising his iconic role, others wonder if the series has run its course. After all, the franchise has already seen numerous changes over the years, including shifts in tone and casting. Would a new installment with Depp bring back the magic, or would it risk feeling outdated?

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is for sure: the Pirates franchise is far from finished. Whether it’s a return for Depp, or a new direction for the series, fans will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the high seas.

What do you think? Would you love to see Johnny Depp return as Captain Jack Sparrow? Or is it time for Disney to chart a new course and leave Pirates in the past? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
