It’s been four years since Disney released Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The Star Wars universe seemed to be shifting to Disney Plus shows. Every report of a new movie was about how they had all turned into complete disasters even before the writing process was entire.

But now, Disney has delivered a significant announcement about three new Star Wars films, and to deliver the information, Lucas Films President Kathleen Kennedy brought back Rey to rile up the crowd. At the Star Wars Celebration on Friday, April 7, Lucas Films brought out Daisy Ridley in her return as Rey in the first of the three films.

The first film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel (2022). Obaid-Chinoy told the audience that this new film will:

Be set in a Jedi academy with a powerful Jedi master.

That’s when Ridley appeared to the delight of the crowd. This new film will be set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, and Rey’s mission will be to rebuild the Jedi Order.

The three films will not be part of a trilogy, like the previous iterations of the Star Wars universe, but more like Rogue One (2016) and Solo (2018), hopefully with better results than Solo.

Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni will helm the second film. This film will be set during the time of the New Republic.

The final film will be directed by James Mangold, who recently finished up with the last Indiana Jones film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). This film will dig deep into the Jedi lore and explore the first Jedi ever to wield the Force.

Disney announces three new Star Wars films

So far, no release dates have been announced for any of the films, but the first of the three films is expected to be released in 2027. It’s a long time to wait for a new Star Wars film, but plenty of Disney Plus shows keep the audience entertained until then. The Mandalorian is finishing its third season, although it has been lackluster. In 2023, Star Wars fans can also look forward to Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew on Disney Plus.

Perhaps this new film can help to redeem The Rise of Skywalker and possibly answer some of the questions and issues left undone. Maybe the audience can finally find out who Rey’s parents are. What was Finn going to tell Rey in the film? Will we be getting more ghost Luke Skywalker? Or Yoda?
