Universal Orlando Strips Halloween Decorations as Hurricane Milton Intensifies

Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) is Universal Orlando's crown jewel during the spooky season, but Hurricane Milton may soon throw a wrench into this year’s festivities.

As the storm rapidly intensifies, Universal Orlando Resort has started making preparations, and fans of the event are anxiously awaiting updates. With Halloween Horror Nights taking place weekly from Wednesday to Sunday, many wonder if the event will be canceled, postponed, or somehow saved.

Hurricane Milton, now a Category 5 storm with sustained winds over 150 mph, is forecasted to hit Florida by Wednesday, October 9.

The National Hurricane Center has placed much of Central Florida under a hurricane watch, warning of potential storm surges, flooding, and high winds that could cause significant damage. Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World are both monitoring the situation closely, though neither park has announced official closures just yet.

Halloween Horror Nights 2024 has been a massive draw since it kicked off in August, with haunted houses and scare zones based on popular franchises like Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, A Quiet Place, and Insidious: The Further. But despite the buzz surrounding this year's event, Universal has already begun to dismantle key HHN elements in preparation for the storm. The iconic Halloween Horror Nights medallion adorning the entrance archway has been taken down, along with the temporary queue setups for the haunted houses.

While Universal hasn't officially canceled the October 9 event, fans are growing increasingly worried that Hurricane Milton will force a closure. Historically, Universal Orlando rarely shuts down due to hurricanes, but it has happened before, and with a storm of this magnitude, safety concerns are paramount.

Many fans remember how past storms like Hurricane Irma and Dorian caused temporary shutdowns at the parks. However, those storms allowed operations to resume within a day or two.

Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights is one of its most profitable events, drawing horror fans from all over the country. Canceling even one night of the event could result in a significant financial loss for the resort. Still, guest safety is the top priority, and the decision will likely come down to how severe the storm’s impact will be on Central Florida.

Currently, the parks remain open, and all operations are continuing as planned. But with each passing day, the storm’s impact becomes more apparent, and guests are urged to stay updated through official channels. It’s possible that the park will wait until the last minute to make a decision regarding the fate of Halloween Horror Nights on October 9, but if Hurricane Milton keeps its current path and intensity, it’s likely only a matter of time before more announcements are made.

For fans hoping to attend Halloween Horror Nights this week, it’s a tense waiting game. The prospect of cancellations or closures is real, but there’s still a chance that Universal Orlando could weather the storm and get the event back on track. As the storm inches closer, the next few days will determine how Halloween Horror Nights 2024 plays out and whether the event can survive one of the most intense hurricanes of the season.

Keep an eye on Universal’s official announcements and social media for any updates regarding closures or cancellations, and stay safe if you're in the path of the storm!
