Universal Alters Major ‘Harry Potter’ Attraction Just 1 Year After Opening

Epic Universe is barely into its second year, but Universal is already making changes to one of the park's biggest attractions.

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry opened alongside Epic Universe in May 2025 as the centerpiece of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic. Since then, the attraction has become one of the park's biggest draws, regularly attracting lengthy waits.

Now, guests leaving the ride may notice something different.

Universal Replaces Flooring at Battle at the Ministry

Universal has installed new tiling inside the exit hallway for Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry following roughly a month of work.

The replacement stands out because it doesn't match the surrounding flooring. Universal instead used a different nonslip pattern and material in the affected section.

While Universal hasn't provided a detailed explanation for the replacement, wear and tear could explain why the park opted for a more durable material.

It's a relatively minor alteration compared to changing the ride itself. Still, Battle at the Ministry has only been operating for a little more than a year.

Heavy crowds can put enormous stress on theme park infrastructure, especially at an attraction as popular as this one. Thousands of guests can pass through these spaces every day, making even newly constructed areas susceptible to wear.

Battle at the Ministry Has Faced Other Challenges

Of course, flooring hasn't been the biggest concern surrounding the Harry Potter attraction.

Battle at the Ministry originally opened using only a Virtual Queue. Universal later transitioned the attraction to a traditional standby queue, allowing guests to simply get in line.

Those lines can become extremely long.

Depending on crowds and operations, Battle at the Ministry can easily reach waits exceeding 100 minutes. Its slower loading process contributes to the problem, while periods of downtime can make matters even worse.

That has created an unusual situation for one of Epic Universe's most impressive attractions. Battle at the Ministry is a major draw, but it has also become one of the park's more troublesome rides operationally.

Some of those problems are much more difficult to address than damaged flooring.

Capacity and accessibility concerns could require more significant solutions. For now, Universal has continued addressing smaller issues as they arise.

Epic Universe Is Already Seeing Refurbishments

The latest Battle at the Ministry work comes as Epic Universe begins experiencing something every theme park eventually faces: scheduled maintenance.

Several attractions have already undergone brief refurbishments.

Yoshi's Adventure, Mine-Cart Madness featuring Donkey Kong, and Viking Training Camp all received short refurbishments this past spring.

More closures are coming.

The Untrainable Dragon in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk will close from September 15 through September 20, 2026.

Fyre Drill will follow early next year, closing for maintenance from January 25 through February 4, 2027.

None of this means something is fundamentally wrong with Epic Universe. Routine maintenance is necessary at every theme park, no matter how recently it opened.

However, the new flooring at Battle at the Ministry offers another reminder that Epic Universe has moved beyond its grand-opening period.

Universal is now learning how different areas hold up under daily crowds and making adjustments along the way.

For Battle at the Ministry, that currently means a new surface under guests' feet. The bigger question is whether Universal can eventually find solutions for the attraction's more complicated operational challenges.
