Equipment Arrives for Demolition of 26-Year-Old Disney World Theme Park

For the past 26 years, Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park has been a sanctuary for exotic wildlife, thrilling adventures, and immersive storytelling. But now, the park's landscape is changing forever, as demolition officially begins on its theme park within a theme park, DinoLand U.S.A.

DinoLand U.S.A. Enters Its Final Chapter

Last month, Walt Disney World Resort closed most of DinoLand U.S.A. to make way for a brand-new land based on the “Tropical Americas” concept. The upcoming expansion, named Pueblo Esperanza, will introduce Encanto (2021) attractions and a reimagined Indiana Jones ride to replace DINOSAUR.

On January 12, 2025, the following DinoLand U.S.A. attractions shut down permanently:

  • Chester & Hester's DinoRama
  • Fossil Fun Games
  • Chester & Hester's Dinosaur Treasures
  • TriceraTop Spin

However, some parts of the land are still standing—for now. The Boneyard playground, Restaurantosaurus, Dino-Bite Snacks, Trilo-Bites, and the DINOSAUR ride remain open through the end of 2025.

One month after the closures of multiple attractions, heavy machinery has arrived at the site, marking the first phase of demolition.

According to BlogMickey, at least two large excavators are now stationed inside the walled-off remains of Chester & Hester's DinoRama. While no major teardown has begun yet, signs of deconstruction are already visible.

Some of TriceraTop Spin's components have been dismantled, and sections of the Fossil Fun Games booths have already been removed.

Walt Disney World Resort has not yet announced an official construction timeline for Pueblo Esperanza, but with demolition equipment onsite, changes are expected to ramp up quickly.

The Slow Death of DinoLand U.S.A.

While January's closures may have been the final nail in DinoLand U.S.A.'s coffin, its downfall began years ago.

In 2019, Primeval Whirl, a spinning wild mouse-style coaster, was reduced to seasonal operations before being permanently shuttered in 2020. After Disney parks temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Primeval Whirl never reopened. By the end of the year, ride vehicles were removed, and demolition crews tore the attraction down, leaving behind an empty space that remained untouched for years.

Now, the rest of DinoLand U.S.A. is following suit. With excavators onsite and early teardown efforts underway, it's only a matter of time before the beloved (and sometimes controversial) land is gone for good.

What's Next for Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park?

DinoLand U.S.A.'s replacement, Pueblo Esperanza, is set to completely reimagine this section of the fourth Central Florida Disney park. Based on Latin American cultures, stories, and landscapes, the new land will introduce attractions themed around Disney's Encanto and an Indiana Jones transformation for DINOSAUR.

Walt Disney World Resort has not confirmed an official opening date for Pueblo Esperanza, but fans expect major construction to continue through 2026.

As Disney prepares for this massive transformation, guests at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park still have one last chance to visit the remaining attractions before the land disappears forever.
