New Muppets Movie in the Works? Disney Insider Weighs In

In 2004, The Walt Disney Company acquired The Muppets from The Jim Henson Company for $75 million. Since then, Disney has produced numerous Muppets TV shows, films, and specials. In recent years, Muppets Haunted Mansion debuted on Disney+ for the 2021 Halloween season, and fans were thrilled by how it paid tribute to the beloved Disney attraction while adding a Muppets twist.

Disney also attempted a new series, The Muppets Mayhem, which followed Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Unfortunately, the show was canceled after just one season.

But Disney+ isn’t the only place where Muppet fans can get their fix. Visitors to Walt Disney World Resort can enjoy the lively Muppet*Vision 3D show at Hollywood Studios and grab a bite at PizzeRizzo.

Sadly, the Muppet-themed area at Hollywood Studios will be closing on June 8 to make way for a new land based on the 2001 Pixar film Monsters, Inc. Fans were heartbroken by the news and even more so when Disney revealed that Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster would be re-themed with Muppets characters.

Fortunately, it appears Disney may not be completely abandoning The Muppets just yet.

For decades, The Muppets have entertained audiences with their unique brand of humor, music, and heart. While the franchise has seen its ups and downs under Disney’s ownership, a new report suggests that fans may have something exciting to look forward to—a brand-new Muppets movie may be in the works!

Disney Reportedly Planning a Muppets Film

While details are scarce, the report states that when asked about Disney’s future plans for the franchise, the insider responded, “I can not say much, but what I can say is, there is a new movie in the works.”

This tease has ignited speculation among fans, many of whom have been wondering about The Muppets’ future following the cancellation of The Muppets Mayhem after just one season. The potential for a new film suggests that Disney is not giving up on the beloved characters just yet.

What Could the New Muppets Movie Be About?

If this rumor proves true, the big question is: what kind of story will this new Muppets movie tell? The franchise’s last theatrical release, Muppets Most Wanted (2014), took Kermit and the gang on a crime-filled adventure across Europe, while 2011’s The Muppets was a nostalgic revival that introduced the characters to a new generation.

Could Disney take a fresh approach with an original concept? Or will they lean into nostalgia, bringing back familiar elements that long-time fans love? Given the success of Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021) on Disney+, it’s also possible that the new film could blend The Muppets with another iconic Disney attraction, creating an entertaining crossover event.

The Future of The Muppets at Disney

The potential for a new film comes at an interesting time for The Muppets. Fans have been disheartened by recent changes, including the upcoming closure of MuppetVision 3D* at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to make way for a Monsters, Inc.-themed land.

However, the reported movie suggests that Disney still sees value in the franchise and may be planning a broader revival.

As of now, Disney has not officially confirmed the project, and details remain limited. However, Inside the Magic will continue to follow any developments.
