In February 2020, after 15 years at the helm, CEO Bob Iger stepped down, and Bob Chapek took over the role at The Walt Disney Company. Chapek’s tenure, however, was marred by controversy and missteps, leading to his dismissal by Disney’s Board of Directors less than three years into his term.
Iger then returned as CEO in November 2022, setting in motion a succession plan that now has the company’s leadership team searching for a new candidate whom Iger can mentor before he eventually departs.

Disney’s leadership saga continues to capture headlines as the hunt for the next CEO intensifies. With Bob Iger’s extended contract set to end in 2026, the pressure is on to select a successor who can navigate both corporate challenges and a politically charged environment.
While many factors are being weighed, one personal connection is emerging as a potential game-changer — a longtime friendship that spans over three decades.
While several names have surfaced as potential candidates, there are reportedly four on Iger’s shortlist: Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, the co-chairs of Disney Entertainment; Josh D’Amaro, the current Chairman of Disney Parks; and Jimmy Pitaro, the Chairman of ESPN, which is owned by Disney.

During Chapek’s tumultuous time as CEO, it was widely reported that Iger felt pressured into making a hasty leadership decision and later regretted appointing Chapek to the position. This experience has made Iger all the more determined to select someone who not only has the right credentials but can also be nurtured into the role over time.
However, amid the corporate maneuvering and strategic discussions, one personal factor has started to dominate the conversation: Dana Walden’s long-standing friendship with former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Ms. Walden and Harris have been close friends for over 30 years. In fact, the former Vice President shared that Walden and her husband were the ones who introduced Harris to Doug Emhoff, the man who would eventually become her husband, by setting them up on a blind date.
While many might not see such a friendship as problematic, it has become a significant factor for Iger’s succession committee, especially amid growing concerns due to the second Trump presidency.
The current political climate has forced Iger and his board to consider whether personal political affiliations might sway the leadership decision.

In one detailed analysis, Matthew Belloni of Puck weighed in on the matter:
“I think board chair James Gorman and his succession committee will go with the candidate they believe will best steer the company well beyond the Trump years.”
Belloni further elaborates on the potential downside of Walden’s relationship:
“If that is ultimately Walden – a big if for many reasons more legitimate than a friendship with a politician – I think she gets the nod on the merits, regardless of the short-term political problems Still, Trump is clearly a major concern, and Walden takes a hit because of that.”

Adding another layer to the discussion, it’s noted that Ms. Walden has not hosted a fundraising event for Kamala Harris since 2022, when ABC News came under her control. Nevertheless, her personal political donations remain a point of contention; in 2023, she donated $20,000 to the Democratic Party for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign.
This political aspect comes as Disney prepares to make an announcement regarding its next CEO, reportedly sometime in early 2026.
Should Dana Walden be selected, she would make history as the first woman to lead The Walt Disney Company in its one-hundred-year history.
What do you think? Should the current Trump administration’s legacy and political affiliations influence who is chosen as the next CEO of Disney? Should Ms. Walden’s close ties be held against her? Share your thoughts in the comments!

What Disney needs is someone that’s can clean up the woke and sickness in Disney for the last four years. Get back to family values, and not men dressed as woman working in little girl’s dress shops. Reduce the cost of tickets & pass holder passes, to incl. fast passes, park hopping, cancel the reservation system BS for passholders ONLY, COVID is OVER, and stop increasing the costs, which feels like is a monthly thing. Once every other year would be a good idea to bring back those that have not renewed their Pass holder passes and probably won’t, and families that can’t afford the costs Disney has out now. Get singles lines at ALL Rides and shows, I’m one like many that travel alone, and should not have to make those ridiculous lines. DAS, Disney needs to acknowledge that they are many disabilities and needs to allow us to be able to get our DAS pass, we do not all have mental issues, and should not be the ONLY Disability accepted
I totally agree that we need someone with Family values like it use to be Walt would be very upset with everything that’s been going on He made this park for everyone can afford and I’m also tired of of the woke being pushed on us and our kids. Really miss the old Disney so please find some that cares and have family values
If Dana is chosen, her connections with Harris and her party will more than likely kill Disney due to her left side political views. Look what happened to Chapek and Disney when those leftist policies were instilled. Stockholders should beware and choose correctly for the bottom line to be solvent.
