The Shocking Celebrity Who Came Close to Voicing Goofy Will Leave You Speechless!

When you think of Disney’s lovable Goofy, it’s hard not to immediately picture Bill Farmer’s unmistakable voice. For decades, Farmer has been the heart and soul behind Goofy’s distinct sound, from his first appearance in Mickey’s Revue in 1932 all the way to his more recent roles in Disney films and television.

But imagine a world where Goofy wasn’t voiced by Farmer — what if another iconic Hollywood figure had stepped into those big shoes?

Goofy’s voice has always been an essential part of his charm. When you hear him laugh or speak, there’s no mistaking it — it’s Goofy. But in 1995, when Disney embarked on creating A Goofy Movie, one Disney executive suggested a different direction.

The movie, which would go on to become a cult classic, almost had an entirely different voice for Goofy, and the idea has since left fans wondering what could have been.

Goofy’s big-screen adventure in A Goofy Movie might not have been a box office smash at the time, but over the years, it has earned a special place in the hearts of Disney fans. The movie’s soundtrack remains iconic, and the adventures of Goofy and his son Max have become a memorable part of the Disney legacy.

But the casting of Goofy almost looked very different — if one executive’s idea had come to fruition.

In the documentary Not Just a Goof, which premiered on Disney+ on April 7, it was revealed that Jeffrey Katzenberg, then-chairman of Walt Disney Studios, had a wild idea.

According to director Kevin Lima, Katzenberg had suggested that the role of Goofy be voiced not by the iconic Bill Farmer, but by none other than comedy legend Steve Martin. While Martin’s comedic timing and voice would have been an interesting choice, it’s hard to imagine Goofy without Farmer’s distinctive voice.

The idea wasn’t just about bringing a celebrity on board for the role; Katzenberg didn’t want Martin to even attempt to mimic Goofy’s signature voice. Instead, he wanted Martin to speak as himself, adding a level of star power to the character. “Can you imagine listening to Goofy and hearing Steve Martin instead?!” Lima recalled, clearly stunned by the suggestion.

But what really shocked Lima and the rest of the team was Katzenberg’s insistence that Goofy’s voice not be true to the character. The idea was to have Martin speak in his normal voice, so audiences would instantly recognize the star behind the character.

This would have been a huge departure from the Goofy fans had come to know and love.

In the documentary, Lima revealed how, despite the plan, Farmer was asked to record some scenes using his regular voice, just to see how it would sound. “How can you play Goofy with just a regular person’s voice? That would be like Mickey Mouse with Cary Grant’s voice. It’s just incredibly ridiculous,” Lima said.

But under Katzenberg’s direction, the team reluctantly tried the idea, though they were all unconvinced that it would work.

For Farmer, the idea was both perplexing and upsetting. In fact, he admitted that he had a “complete meltdown” over the thought of Goofy sounding completely different. “I went home and I didn’t get much sleep those days ’cause I was worried, ‘don’t they want to hear Goofy when they hear ‘A Goofy Movie’?’” Farmer confessed, clearly anxious about the direction things were heading.

After a few days of recording scenes in a voice that wasn’t Goofy’s, the footage was shown to Katzenberg. Thankfully, after viewing it, the executive realized the error of his ways. “A Goofy Movie could not change the voice of Goofy, as it just wouldn’t be the same,” Lima said. And after seeing the footage, Katzenberg agreed, acknowledging that the character simply wouldn’t work without Farmer’s voice.

While the idea of Steve Martin voicing Goofy might sound intriguing in theory, it’s clear that Farmer’s voice will always be the one most closely associated with the character. The bond between Goofy and his voice actor is so integral that it’s hard to imagine anyone else filling those shoes — or should we say, oversized gloves?

Now, with Not Just a Goof streaming on Disney+, fans can revisit the behind-the-scenes drama of A Goofy Movie and learn about the making of this beloved film.
