Disney Just Keeps Tearing up the Magic Kingdom

Major changes are unfolding at Walt Disney World Resort, and the Magic Kingdom will never be the same. Following the permanent closure of two longtime attractions, Disney has begun clearing even more land around the park, removing a considerable number of trees and reshaping the landscape right before guests’ eyes.

After 53 years of operating as some of the most iconic parts of Frontierland, both Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat officially closed earlier this week. The closures mark the beginning of a massive overhaul at Magic Kingdom Park, and demolition is already in progress. On Wednesday, days after construction crews bulldozed hundreds of trees along the park’s outer perimeter, Disney began clearing even more land.

Walt Disney World Resort is preparing Magic Kingdom Park for two entirely new themed areas, confirmed by Walt Disney Imagineering as part of the expansion plans revealed at D23 Expo 2024. The first is Piston Peak National Park, inspired by Disney’s Cars (2006) universe. This land will take over the former Rivers of America area and include nods to the original Tom Sawyer Island, such as the barrel bridges, while adding new attractions: one family-friendly and one thrill ride.

As Disney begins work on the Frontierland overhaul, crews have also started clearing areas north of Rivers of America. This section is reportedly tied to the long-awaited Disney Villains land, which Imagineers have teased as a dark and exciting space “beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.” Permits filed earlier this year suggest that nearby land is being developed for staging and trailers—both signs of significant activity ahead.

Construction updates show a steady increase in activity. Gravel has been poured outside the park for equipment storage, and now, visible clearing is taking place just beyond the berm. On July 9, BlogMickey reported that more trees were being removed from a section Disney had already designated for future development.

This area is reportedly for equipment staging and construction trailers, but it could also eventually be part of the Disney Villains land when it opens. At the very least, it may be a backstage area for Magic Kingdom Park cast members.

Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t announced an opening date for the Disney Villains land or Piston Peak National Park.
