Television has a way of creating unforgettable bonds between characters and their audiences. For many, some of the most iconic roles ever created were found not on the big screen, but in living rooms across the country during prime time. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the actor who starred as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died. He was 54 years old. Warner rose to fame playing the only son on the groundbreaking NBC comedy series, which aired for eight seasons beginning in 1984. His portrayal of Theo earned him multiple award nominations, including an Emmy nod, and helped solidify his status as a household name.
Warner got his start in the entertainment industry at just 12 years old. Within two short years, he was cast in the role that would define much of his early career. Over the course of more than 190 episodes, Warner charmed viewers with his humor and authenticity—becoming a fan favorite and earning recognition from critics and peers alike.
He also won several Young Artist Awards during his time on the show.

Warner drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday, Costa Rican National Police told ABC News. Warner's official cause of death was asphyxia, police said.
Warner died near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica, police said. Police said he was caught by a high current in the water and was discovered Sunday afternoon.
Warner was formally identified by Costa Rica's national police.

Though he spent much of his life in the spotlight, Warner was known for being intensely private. He is survived by his wife and daughter, whose names he never shared publicly, choosing instead to protect their privacy. His career included dozens of roles beyond The Cosby Show, but fans always remembered him best as Theo.
