Tree Catches Fire at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, Causes Evacuation

Guests were strolling through Hogsmeade, drinks in hand and spells on standby, when a sudden boom sent heads turning. At first, it sounded like thunder. Then came the flicker of orange, and suddenly, the night took a very real turn.

A tree near Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey at Universal’s Islands of Adventure caught fire after an apparent lightning strike, bringing the magic to a screeching halt.

Flames and Fear in the Wizarding World

The incident unfolded just after 7:30 p.m., right as the skies were darkening with Florida’s usual summer storm clouds. What looked like a normal lightning flash quickly escalated as smoke and fire erupted near one of the land’s main walkways. Guests recorded the moment, capturing flames climbing into the air just steps from the ride entrance.

@d0mesticdoobie I just got in line when I saw the lightning hit and the loudest boom, about 60 seconds later the fire alarm comes on and we all have to evacuate!! Universal team members and emergency responders wasted no time. They quickly evacuated guests from nearby areas and got the fire under control. The Orlando Fire Department cleared the scene in about half an hour, and thankfully, no one was injured.

Not an Isolated Event

This is far from the only recent fire-related scare at a Central Florida theme park. Earlier this week, two buses caught fire at Universal’s own transportation depot. And just a few months ago, a backstage fire at EPCOT led to a temporary evacuation near Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. While none of these incidents are related, they’re starting to feel like part of an unfortunate pattern.

Summer in Florida brings unpredictable storms, heavy rain, and yes—dangerous lightning. And as this incident shows, that lightning doesn’t always stay in the sky.

A Close Call With Nature

Universal has yet to release an official statement, but videos are already circulating online, with fans reacting in shock. It's easy to forget that in parks filled with dragons, trolls, and superheroes, the real world can still sneak in.

This particular fire didn’t cause lasting damage, but it was close enough to one of Universal’s most iconic rides to cause a serious stir. Outdoor queues and attractions are especially vulnerable during storm season, which makes quick staff response all the more critical.

What Guests Should Know Moving Forward

If you’re heading to Universal anytime soon, just remember: July and August can be volatile. Even when the skies look calm, it doesn’t take much for things to change. Keep an eye on the weather, listen for announcements, and don’t be afraid to duck into a shop or indoor attraction if lightning rolls in.

In this case, fast action stopped the fire before it turned into something worse. But for a few tense moments, it wasn’t wands or wizards making sparks fly—it was Mother Nature herself.

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
