Why a Crashed Bobsled on Disneyland’s Matterhorn Is a Memorial to a Disney Exec

Disneyland is full of hidden touches that most guests pass right by. From tributes to legendary Imagineers to references only die-hard fans catch, it’s these small details that give Disney Parks their signature magic. But sometimes, one of those details turns out to have a backstory that’s surprisingly emotional—or even a little unsettling.

If you’ve ever ridden the Matterhorn Bobsleds in Fantasyland, you probably remember the rumble of the mountain, the sight of icy caverns, and the sudden jolt when the Yeti makes his terrifying appearance. But there’s one scene you may have missed entirely—unless you looked very closely.

Tucked inside the Matterhorn attraction is a crashed bobsled—one that looks like it’s been abandoned after a failed expedition. It adds to the ride’s eerie vibe, hinting that the previous explorers didn’t make it past the mountain’s guardian. But this detail isn’t just another bit of creative theming—it’s actually a memorial.

If you examine the wreckage, you’ll spot a name stenciled on the vehicle: “Wells Expedition.” This subtle label is a tribute to Frank Wells, the late President and Chief Operating Officer of The Walt Disney Company. Wells worked alongside Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg during the Disney Renaissance of the late 1980s and early ’90s, a golden era for the company’s animation and theme park expansion.

Wells was also an accomplished mountaineer, making his name in business and adventure alike. Sadly, his time at Disney was cut short. In 1994, Wells died in a helicopter crash while returning from a heli-skiing trip in Nevada’s Ruby Mountains. Weather delays had forced the helicopter to land and wait.

When they finally attempted to take off, snow that had accumulated on the aircraft was reportedly ingested into the engine, causing it to flame out. The helicopter rolled down a 30-degree slope and crashed. The National Transportation Safety Board later confirmed that the snow ingestion had caused the accident.

The Disney community was shaken by the news. To remember Wells and his adventurous spirit, Disney Imagineers chose to pay tribute in the very environment that mirrored his love of mountains and exploration. The Matterhorn, one of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions, became the site of his memorial.

While the “Wells Expedition” label is easy to miss, those who do notice it sometimes find it oddly morbid. After all, honoring someone who died in a real-life crash with imagery of a fictional crash can strike a strange chord. Still, for many fans, it’s a meaningful and creative way to keep Wells’s memory alive, nestled within a ride he almost certainly appreciated.

Have you ever noticed the “Wells Expedition” bobsled while riding the Matterhorn? Do you think Disney’s tribute was heartfelt or a little too eerie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments, and share your favorite hidden Disney detail with us!
