A peaceful day in paradise took an unexpected turn for Disney Cruise Line guests when a hammerhead shark was spotted swimming close to shore at Castaway Cay, the company’s private island in the Bahamas. The moment was caught on video and quickly circulated on TikTok, showing startled vacationers rushing out of the water as the shark’s shadowy figure passed nearby.
The shark was sighted in the adult-exclusive Serenity Bay area, where no shark nets are installed, prompting immediate panic among swimmers who fled the water in visible distress.

A Scary Incident for Cruise Guests
In the now-viral video, beachgoers can be seen sprinting through the shallows after realizing what was in the water with them. Though lifeguards and cruise staff are stationed around Castaway Cay, Serenity Bay’s lack of enclosed swimming areas makes it more susceptible to occasional marine wildlife encounters.
One Disney discussion forum user claimed to have seen a similar shark in the same area during a past cruise, describing it as “about 20 feet off shoreline” and calmly following stingrays.
Castaway Cay sits near Great Abaco Island and spans roughly 1,000 acres, with only a small portion developed for tourism. Known for its white-sand beaches, clear waters, and snorkeling areas, the island has long been a highlight of Disney cruise itineraries. Most beaches on the island include safety nets and lifeguards, but the adult-only area where the shark was spotted is left open to nature, allowing stingrays, nurse sharks, and—occasionally—hammerheads to appear.
While the shark’s presence sparked alarm, experts note that hammerheads are common in tropical waters and usually avoid human interaction. The shark seen in the video is believed to be a small adult, likely moving through the area as part of a routine marine migration.

A Video Surfaces
Guest reactions to the video were mixed. While some expressed fear, others noted that learning about potential wildlife encounters could help temper future panic. Disney Cruise Line has not reported any injuries or attacks as a result of the incident.
The company maintains strict safety protocols across Castaway Cay’s developed beaches. However, with Serenity Bay offering a more natural shoreline, guests are advised to remain alert and follow all instructions from lifeguards and cast members.

For those planning future visits:
- Shark sightings remain rare and non-aggressive in these waters.
- Serenity Bay, while scenic and serene, is not enclosed by shark nets.
- Guests should always follow safety announcements and crew instructions if wildlife is seen.
Even in Disney’s most tranquil destinations, nature can make a surprise appearance—reminding guests that the magic sometimes includes an unexpected thrill.
