Six Flags Great America Announces Closure in Five Days

Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, has announced a closure set to begin in just five days. The Midwestern theme park has given guests just five days to experience the Raging Bull roller coaster before it closes indefinitely.

On August 11, Six Flags Great America confirmed that the “last chance to ride” Raging Bull will be August 18, 2025. The roller coaster debuted in 1999 and is known as the world’s first hyper-twister coaster, and is a fan favorite among thrill-seekers. At nearly 202 feet tall, Raging Bull has become one of the park’s standout rides, offering an adrenaline-packed experience on a nearly mile-long track, reaching speeds of 73 miles per hour.

According to Six Flags Great America, crews will be repainting Raging Bull beginning August 19. The exact duration of the closure is unknown, but the work will likely last for some time, given the size of the ride and its over 5,000-foot-long track. It’s unclear whether the Southwest Territory roller coaster will return for Fright Fest, which begins on September 13.

This isn’t the only change for Midwestern theme park fans this month. Beginning August 18, Six Flags Great America will end its summer operating hours. The park will only be open on weekends and select weekdays until the end of the season in November. Guests are encouraged to check the official Six Flags website for the most up-to-date information on hours and operating schedules.

Six Flags Great America has had a big year, debuting the Wrath of Rakshasa Dive Coaster in May 2025. This brand-new roller coaster will remain open to Illinois theme park guests during the upcoming maintenance work on Raging Bull.
