The Rise and Fall of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Once upon a time, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa was the ultimate symbol of luxury at Walt Disney World. With its crisp white exterior, red rooftops, and location just a Monorail stop away from Magic Kingdom, it became a bucket-list stay for many Disney fans.

But lately, the conversation has shifted. The nightly rates remain sky-high, yet more guests are walking away feeling like the experience no longer lives up to the hype.

When Luxury Doesn’t Feel Luxurious

Paying upwards of $800 a night should buy peace, quiet, and premium comfort. Instead, some guests report hearing neighbors through walls that feel paper-thin. One traveler described it as “more like a mid-tier hotel with a nice paint job,” while another admitted they could hear entire conversations from the next room.

Beautiful Grounds, Inconvenient Layout

The sprawling grounds make for postcard-worthy views but can be a hassle in Florida’s heat or sudden rain. Depending on your building, you may face a lengthy walk from the lobby — a trek that can feel even longer after a full day in the parks.

Monorail Magic… With a Catch

Yes, the Grand Floridian boasts Monorail access, but the benefit is mostly for Magic Kingdom guests. EPCOT visitors still have to transfer at the TTC, and late-night rides back can be painfully slow since the resort is the last stop on the loop.

Holiday Magic That Backfires

Seasonal decorations like the massive Christmas gingerbread house are undeniably impressive — and that’s the problem. They bring in crowds from all over Walt Disney World, making the lobby feel more like a holiday shopping mall than a luxury resort retreat.

Despite these frustrations, the Grand Floridian still has its defenders. For some, the combination of elegant dining, Victorian charm, and location outweighs the downsides. But for others, the magic has faded, replaced by the feeling that the price tag no longer matches the experience.

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
