New Information Comes To Light Over Avengers Squad in Upcoming ‘Doomsday’

The Avengers are preparing for their biggest reinvention yet, and Marvel Studios has mapped out a new future for its heroes on the big screen.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is officially off the board. Following Jonathan Majors’ legal troubles and departure from Marvel, the storyline centered on Kang has been abandoned. Replacing it is Avengers: Doomsday (2026), a massive crossover designed to reset the franchise’s path.

At the center of the shake-up is Robert Downey Jr.’s highly anticipated return—not as Tony Stark, but as Victor Von Doom. The role gives Downey a second life within the MCU, this time as one of Marvel’s most formidable villains.

To bring the spectacle to life, Marvel has tapped Joe and Anthony Russo once again. After steering Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) to box office dominance, the Russos are back to guide Doomsday, signaling Marvel’s desire to recapture the tone and scope of its earlier climactic chapters.

The release calendar has also shifted. Avengers: Doomsday now opens December 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027. Both films were delayed by seven months from their initial dates.

Sources close to the project suggest the delays stem from Marvel’s push for refinement, with the Doomsday script still being developed. The company appears to be prioritizing patience over rapid output after mixed reactions to several Phase Four and Five entries.

Still, Marvel isn’t shrinking its ambitions. Doomsday will bring together Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Thunderbolts characters, creating what may be the largest lineup ever for a Marvel film. Where Endgame closed out a decade-long saga, Doomsday is meant to ignite the next stage of storytelling.

This shift reflects Disney’s corporate realignment as well. Variety noted: “The notable decrease in theatrical Marvel features on the immediate horizon aligns with Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recently articulated strategy for the company’s superhero features.”

During an investor call, Iger elaborated: “Marvel Studios had ‘lost a little focus by making too much’ between its tentpoles and various Disney+ series. He continued, ‘By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe that will result in better quality.'”

Iger’s message since returning as CEO in 2022 has been about quality over quantity, and Marvel’s latest scheduling moves echo that vision. Beyond the Avengers changes, Disney reassigned three additional dates—February 13, 2026, November 6, 2026, and November 5, 2027—from Marvel to other studio projects.

Strategically, Marvel may also benefit from placing Doomsday in December. Positioned after Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), the film could gain a box office boost from the holiday window and Spidey’s lead-in momentum.

The cast list reveals the scope. Familiar faces return alongside major newcomers, raising speculation about how the Russos will manage such a vast ensemble. Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus teased on X:

“Fate of the entire multiverse hangs in the balance and two of the main teams have tension with each other because the leaders are still trying to sort out the “mantle” debacle. And then add the OG to the mix. Bruh…”

Fans quickly theorized that Doomsday could see Sam Wilson’s Avengers clashing with The New Avengers (introduced in Thunderbolts*’ post-credits) while the original six also reenter the fight.

One fan, ricardo (@ricardozarate), responded: “And guys wdym with “elaborate”? It’s clearly “Avengers” v “The New Avengers” v “the OG Avengers” (v “X-Men”)”

Though Marvel hasn’t officially disclosed the plot, many expect Doomsday to redefine the Avengers brand once again, over a decade after the original team debuted in 2012.

As Just Majesty (@thanksbutton) summed up: “Essentially, it’s Infinity War but bigger.”

The confirmed ensemble includes Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

Other cast members include Channing Tatum as Gambit, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, Tenoch Huerta Mejia as Namor, Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
