Disney World To Lose Resort Status in One Week–Here’s Why

A milestone summer at Walt Disney World Resort is about to come to an end. On September 8, Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park will close indefinitely, concluding a rare stretch when all six Disney destinations were open at once.

The six-park celebration began May 21, 2025, when Blizzard Beach reopened following a brief refurbishment to join Typhoon Lagoon, Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It marked the first time since 2019 that guests could visit every Disney World park during a single vacation. The timing also aligned with the debut of Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe on May 22, an expansion designed to reshape Central Florida tourism.

At the MoffettNathanson Media, Internet & Communications Conference (via Variety), Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro explained that new additions from other companies only strengthen Disney’s presence. “We’re always on the offensive… We’re constantly investing for the long term, fortifying each of our theme parks. If something is built new in central Florida, like Epic Universe, that tourist is going to have to visit the Magic Kingdom.”

But Disney World has been undergoing its own transformation. Construction and reimagining are happening across the resort: Frontierland at Magic Kingdom is being prepared for a new era, Animal Kingdom is replacing DinoLand U.S.A. with fresh stories, and Hollywood Studios is preparing Monstropolis. In 2025, even favorites like It’s Tough to Be a Bug! have closed permanently, emphasizing the resort’s focus on growth and renewal.

For Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, the path has been different. Since the pandemic, the two water parks have rotated openings, ensuring only one is available at a time. Blizzard Beach kicked off 2025, celebrated its 30th anniversary in April, and then closed at the end of that month. Typhoon Lagoon reopened May 1, only for Blizzard Beach to join it weeks later in May for a rare dual operation.

The water parks have always been a way to step away from the pace of the four theme parks and into a more relaxed experience. Disney highlighted their value even more by introducing a new guest benefit. Announced by Disney Parks Blog in February 2024, the change gives Disney Resort hotel guests free admission to a water park on their check-in day throughout 2025.

“Disney Resort hotel guests arriving in 2025 can enjoy admission to one of our water parks, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park or Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park, on their check-in day, included in their stay,” Disney wrote. “The fun can start on day one at a Disney water park when you stay in the Disney Resorts Collection! And, yes, to all the Disney Vacation Club Members, Annual Passholders, and cast members, you can enjoy this benefit on check-in day for your Disney Resort hotel stay, too!”

Guests took advantage of this addition even as prices continued to climb elsewhere at the resort. It was one of the ways Disney enhanced the arrival experience, helping families start their vacation with a splash.

Now, as September 7 marks the last day of Blizzard Beach operations, favorites like Summit Plummet, Toboggan Racers, Melt-Away Bay, and Tike’s Peak will close once more. The rotating schedule is familiar to many after years of similar operation, though the indefinite timeline makes the farewell more uncertain.

From EPCOT’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind to the heights of Tower of Terror and the beauty of Pandora–The World of Avatar, Disney World’s four theme parks continue to offer countless adventures. Cinderella Castle itself is preparing for changes ahead. While the summer of six parks may be ending, Walt Disney World Resort’s story is still unfolding with more chapters yet to be written.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
