Long before its first episode reaches audiences, HBO's Harry Potter has made one thing plain: this is not going to be a shot-for-shot retread of the eight films that preceded it.
That approach is reflected in the show's ambitious seven-season format, and it's increasingly visible in a series of casting choices — some planned, some forced by circumstance — that have altered the show's ensemble well ahead of its Season 1 debut this December with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Nowhere is that philosophy clearer than in how the production is preparing to handle “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” J. K. Rowling's second novel published in 1998 and the source material for Season 2. The book follows a mystery that grips Hogwarts after a monster begins petrifying students across the school, with Ginny Weasley unknowingly at the heart of it all.
Manipulated through Tom Riddle's enchanted diary, Ginny is the one who unwittingly unleashes the Chamber of Secrets, and by the novel's end she has been taken into the chamber itself, setting the stage for Harry's confrontation with a teenage vision of Voldemort. It is a substantially larger part than the one Ginny plays in Philosopher's Stone, which makes a recast in the role especially significant.
Gracie Cochrane, who played Ginny throughout Season 1, will not carry the role into Season 2. HBO has cited only “unforeseen circumstances” in explaining her departure. Bonnie Hill, whose past work includes Film Club and The Six Triple Eight (2024), has stepped into the part. Cochrane herself acknowledged the transition, resharing HBO's casting announcement on social media with the caption “Handing over the wand,” alongside a simple “Good luck” for her successor.
Hill is not the only new face joining the Chamber of Secrets chapter of the story. Lenny Rush will lend his voice to Dobby, the house-elf whose well-intentioned but disastrous efforts to keep Harry from returning to Hogwarts fuel a significant portion of the book's plot — a role Toby Jones brought to life in the film adaptation. Billy Barratt, an International Emmy winner for Responsible Child (2019) with recent credits in Kraven the Hunter (2024) and Bring Her Back (2025), has been tapped to play the teenage version of Tom Riddle, the character whose diary sits at the center of the book's mystery.
There's also been a change at the top of the call sheet: Nicholas Hoult has exited the role of Gilderoy Lockhart, the self-absorbed celebrity professor who anchors much of the book's comic relief. Game of Thrones alum Kit Harington, widely recognized for his portrayal of Jon Snow, has been announced as Hoult's replacement.
All of this builds on a Season 1 cast that notably steered clear of nostalgia-driven casting from the outset. Dominic McLaughlin leads as Harry Potter, alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
As for when audiences might actually see Chamber of Secrets, HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has already tempered expectations of a quick turnaround. “For some of the bigger shows like Harry Potter or House of the Dragon, or The Last of Us, hugeinn world-building shows, it would be nice to have those on an annual basis,” Bloys said in comments to The Hollywood Reporter. “But from a production point of view, it's just not possible.” That alone suggested a 2028 release window for Season 2 at the soonest — and recent developments suggest that timeline may slip further.
Reports indicate that Season 2 filming, once planned to begin in August, has now been delayed to October after Warner Bros. leadership reportedly rejected (and trashed) earlier script drafts over issues with plot and characterization. A source speaking to The Sun said, “Filming for series two was meant to start in August. We had dates to start filming, but the scripts have not been finished… The cost implications are huge.”
The insider added that “many staff are stood down from next week,” describing a production in which crew members are going unpaid mid-rewrite, with some unsure if they'll be able to return once shooting resumes. “The scripts haven't been signed off, prompting the delay,” the source continued, explaining that “a number of scenes need tweaking because they are not quite right” because “the powers-that-be want everything perfect.”
One casting mystery remains unsolved through all of this: the adult Voldemort. Barratt's casting only accounts for the character in his teenage form, meaning the fully transformed villain — who won't appear on the page until 2000's “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” — is still up for grabs. At the franchise's current production pace, that installment could be years away, possibly not arriving until 2032.
Online speculation has floated Daniel Radcliffe for the part, though many consider the idea a long shot given how strongly he remains associated with his original role as Harry Potter himself.
