Over time, Disney has updated many of its employee guidelines to reflect a more inclusive environment. In recent years, the company has eased up on appearance standards, allowing facial hair, tattoos, and a greater variety of hairstyles. Even nails are now included in the changes. Gender-neutral costumes have been introduced, and men can wear outfits once restricted to women.
Cast members celebrated these adjustments, appreciating the chance to express themselves more freely while still maintaining the polished Disney look.
Still, despite a wave of modernization in some areas, certain rules remain as rigid as ever. A former Cast Member, using the pseudonym “Michael,” spoke to The Daily Mail about the demanding nature of the job.

Michael spent nearly a decade working in attractions before being promoted to “coordinator,” a role that sits just below management. While he admitted there were perks, he also said the position came with immense pressure and unforgiving standards.
Michael explained that employees were expected to follow strict protocols that most guests would never think about.
He explained that employees had to follow strict rules, like not being able to take any photos backstage or wear smart watches, or you’d be fired.
‘Safety critical roles, such as [working the] attractions had some strict guidelines,’ Michael shared.
‘An example of a strict rule, was no smart watches. Any device could be a distraction from vehicle motion and could get you fired if you’re caught wearing one.’

In today’s world, smartwatches are a daily staple for millions of people. They’re used to check the time, answer messages, track health, and more. But Disney feared that these devices could pose distractions in environments where focus and attentiveness are non-negotiable.
Operating a ride involves moving vehicles, precise timing, and constant vigilance. Any lapse in concentration could put guests or fellow employees in danger. For Disney, this rule was non-negotiable.
Disney’s enforcement of its rules has extended beyond smartwatches. Cast Members have lost jobs for recording or sharing backstage videos, often revealing aspects of the parks that the company prefers to keep private.

One viral video showing cast members behaving inappropriately while in costume shocked fans and demonstrated why Disney is so protective of its behind-the-scenes image. These incidents highlight that for Disney, maintaining safety and preserving the illusion of magic go hand in hand.
Outside of workplace conduct, Cast Members have also voiced their frustrations with other challenges, particularly compensation. While pay rates in Florida are higher than minimum wage, many workers argue that they’re still insufficient to cover the cost of living in the area.
In California, the company has even faced lawsuits for failing to pay Disneyland employees what they were legally owed. These financial issues add another layer of stress to a job that already comes with demanding standards.
