Universal Orlando is moving ahead with a long-anticipated change at Islands of Adventure. The Lost Continent, a land that has stood since the park’s 1999 opening, is officially being retired. Demolition permits have been filed for several acres of the space, and construction is expected to begin soon. For many fans, it’s the end of an era, but also the chance to imagine what exciting new world could rise in its place.

The Decline of a Once-Mighty Land
The Lost Continent was originally themed around ancient myths and legends, immersing guests in tales of gods, beasts, and hidden temples. Over the years, however, its offerings began to fade away. The stunt show The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad closed in 2018, and the special-effects-driven Poseidon’s Fury was permanently shut down in 2023. What’s left now is only a restaurant, a few quick-service food spots, and a gift shop—far from the bustling land it once was.

Universal’s decision to transform the area has been expected for some time. As other parts of the park grew with major intellectual properties like Harry Potter and Jurassic Park, the Lost Continent became a forgotten corner, with its empty pathways serving more as a shortcut than a destination.
Rumored Replacements
Universal hasn’t confirmed what will move into the space, but three frontrunners have emerged in fan speculation.
The Lord of the Rings – This franchise has been rumored for years, and thematically it’s a near-perfect fit. A transition from Hogsmeade into Middle-earth would feel natural, and the Tolkien universe could easily anchor an expansive new land. While rights issues remain unclear, the idea continues to generate excitement.
The Legend of Zelda – With Nintendo already working closely with Universal on SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Zelda feels like a strong candidate. Its temples, dungeons, and fantastical creatures align closely with the Lost Continent’s existing architecture. Some reports suggest Zelda may not be the chosen property, but fans still hope the franchise finds a home in Orlando eventually.
Expansions to Current Lands – Rather than introduce something entirely new, Universal may decide to grow what it already has. The area’s location makes it ideal for extensions of nearby lands. Possibilities include a Grinch-themed attraction to tie into Seuss Landing or another addition to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, which remains one of Universal’s strongest draws.
What’s Next
Universal’s leadership has been clear about the company’s strategy: intellectual properties are the foundation of its future. CEO Mark Woodbury has emphasized the importance of using major franchises to drive attendance and keep the parks competitive. The closure of the Lost Continent marks the next step in that plan.

Whether the land becomes Middle-earth, a Zelda kingdom, or an expansion of Harry Potter, its transformation will reshape Islands of Adventure in a major way. Fans will have to wait for official confirmation, but one thing is certain—the Lost Continent, as guests have known it for more than two decades, is gone for good.
