Hugh Jackman Won’t Play Wolverine in Marvel’s 2026 Release, New Actor Recast

For decades, Wolverine has cut across comics, TV, and movies as one of Marvel’s most enduring icons. Hugh Jackman’s interpretation in particular defined the character for an entire generation of fans. Now, with both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and a major new video game on the horizon, Logan is about to enter a new chapter.

Jackman first donned the claws in 2000’s X-Men, where his mix of world-weary bravado and reluctant heroism quickly made him the standout of the ensemble cast. His performance became a cornerstone of Fox’s X-Men franchise, spanning the original trilogy, multiple spinoffs, and the continuity-shifting X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).

The journey came to its emotional peak in James Mangold’s Logan (2017). Set in a bleak near-future, the story depicted a broken-down Wolverine and offered the actor an emotional farewell. The film earned critical acclaim, widely considered among the greatest superhero movies ever made. Jackman himself made clear it was the end of his run.

That declaration shifted in 2024, when Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine brought Jackman back for a Marvel Studios debut. The film leaned into Deadpool’s trademark meta humor while showcasing a new spin on Logan. This version wasn’t tied to Logan’s ending but introduced a Multiversal Wolverine in his comic-accurate yellow-and-blue costume. His banter and brutal camaraderie with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool became the centerpiece of the film, striking a balance between nostalgia and reinvention.

Wolverine from the 'Marvel Wolverine' PlayStation game

Outside of theaters, Wolverine is also poised to make a major impact in gaming. Insomniac Games revealed that Marvel’s Wolverine will launch in Fall 2026 exclusively for PlayStation 5. The news came with a cinematic trailer and an official cover reveal, both emphasizing a darker, more violent approach to the character.

Players can expect Logan at his most feral, with gameplay described as fluid, cinematic, and unapologetically brutal. Liam McIntyre, recognized for Spartacus: Vengeance and Gears of War 4, voices the character. As PlayStation Blog stated, “In this story, he is on the hunt to uncover the secrets of a dark past that keeps eluding him.”

The game’s storyline will take Logan around the globe, including Tokyo, Canada, and Madripoor. New footage teased the involvement of Mystique, the Reavers, and Omega Red, with fans speculating about the presence of Sentinels after spotting a prototype robot in the trailer.

To highlight the game’s visual identity, Insomniac collaborated with celebrated comic book artist Jock for the cover art, which channels Wolverine’s rugged presence with bold simplicity.

Accessibility remains a major focus, with developers confirming descriptive audio tracks already included in the trailer and more features to be detailed later. Insomniac plans to share additional updates in Spring 2026.

With its visceral tone and cinematic scope, Marvel’s Wolverine is positioned to become a standout experience for the PlayStation 5 generation, much as Marvel’s Spider-Man defined the console before it.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
