The controversy surrounding Jimmy Kimmel Live! escalated over the past couple of weeks, igniting a firestorm of public backlash and intense scrutiny from both political figures and Disney fans alike. As the pressure mounted, it became evident that the decision to suspend Kimmel’s show wasn’t just about the immediate fallout from his controversial comments.
Rather, a figure from Disney’s past played a pivotal role in bringing the matter to a head, leading to Kimmel’s eventual return to the airwaves.

For Disney CEO Bob Iger, the suspension of Kimmel’s show was an unfortunate addition to an already challenging time. Having faced ongoing challenges from political pressures and internal company issues, the last thing Iger needed was the kind of public relations nightmare that followed Kimmel’s remarks about the tragic death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Kimmel’s comments, speculating on the political affiliations of the perpetrator before official details were released, quickly spiraled into a major controversy, drawing the ire of conservative groups and politicians alike.
As the situation developed, Disney found itself at the center of the storm, with the Trump administration weighing in through the Federal Communications Commission. Brendan Carr, head of the FCC, issued a thinly veiled threat to Disney, warning that the company could face an investigation unless Jimmy Kimmel Live! was pulled from the air.

By September 17, just two days after the statement, Disney and ABC made the decision to suspend the show indefinitely. This move, however, only deepened the controversy, with backlash growing not just from fans but from a number of high-profile celebrities.
Among the critics was former President Barack Obama, who publicly condemned the suspension. Fans also voiced their frustration, staging protests and calling for boycotts of Disney+ and Disney theme parks. But despite this growing outcry, the pivotal moment came from someone outside the current leadership at Disney: former CEO Michael Eisner.
On September 19, Eisner, who had been a towering figure in Disney’s history, sent a tweet that would ultimately affect the course of events. “Where has all the leadership gone?” he asked, a seemingly simple question that cut to the core of the situation.

Although Iger and Eisner have had a strained relationship since Iger succeeded him in 2005, this tweet seemed to strike a chord within Disney’s top ranks. It wasn’t just the message itself, but the weight of Eisner’s stature within the company that made it so impactful. For many, Eisner’s words highlighted a leadership failure at the highest level.
While Iger has long been known for his ability to maintain control in difficult situations, those close to him claim that Eisner’s criticism had an undeniable impact.
According to a report from Puck:
An old Disney hand told me that Iger “loathes Eisner, who tortured and humiliated him in the C.E.O. succession process,” but that doesn’t mean Iger can just shake it off when Eisner calls him out. Eisner was a dominant figure associated with the resuscitation of Disney, which had been adrift before Eisner and his team took over in 1984. Eventually, Eisner’s star faded, but he still has stature, I would guess particularly since Iger had to operate in his shadow for so long.

The mounting pressure on Disney only intensified when two of the company’s largest affiliates, NexStar Media and Sinclair Broadcasting, followed through on their threats to remove Jimmy Kimmel Live! from the air. The suspension was a significant blow not only to Kimmel but to Disney’s reputation as well. The decision seemed to alienate fans, industry professionals, and celebrities, many of whom took to social media to voice their outrage.
However, the tipping point came when the financial consequences of the suspension became impossible to ignore. Disney's stock price took a hit, dropping more than 2%—about $4.4 billion—during the period when Kimmel’s show was off the air.
Less than a week after Kimmel’s suspension, Disney reversed course and announced that the show would return to the airwaves.

According to insiders, Iger — who is said to have a thin skin — was already feeling the weight of mounting criticism before Eisner posted the tweet.
They also noted that, although Eisner typically stayed silent on political matters during his time at Disney, he likely would have defended Jimmy Kimmel and his right to express himself freely.
Two sources who have worked closely with Eisner said they believe he would have made a quick decision to threaten Sinclair and Nexstar, the two station groups that pledged to preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! over the host’s edgy comment about the “MAGA gang’s” response to the Charlie Kirk assassination, with hellfire if they persisted in refusing to carry the show. “Michael doesn’t give a f**k what anybody else thinks if he thinks he’s doing the right thing,” a former Disney insider told me. (“And sometimes it would bite him in the ass,” he added.)

But even after Kimmel made his return, the controversy didn’t die down. The uproar continued as a group of Disney shareholders demanded answers from the company’s board of directors. They believed that the suspension was politically motivated and had harmed the company’s financial standing. The pressure didn’t stop there, as even Donald Trump became a vocal critic, claiming that Disney had made a mistake by bringing Kimmel back.
While the return of Jimmy Kimmel Live! was seen by some as a victory for the comedian and his supporters, the decision didn’t quell the growing unrest within Disney. Shareholders continued to raise concerns, and the company found itself under an increasingly harsh spotlight. The entire situation also had a lasting effect on Disney’s stock, which struggled to regain its footing after the suspension.
