Epic Universe Reopens Stardust Racers, and There Are New Rules To Follow

It started as a thrilling day at Universal’s newest theme park, Epic Universe—a place promising cutting-edge attractions and immersive worlds. But on September 17, 2025, tragedy struck when 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala lost consciousness after riding Stardust Racers. Moments later, the excitement turned to devastation as he was pronounced dead from “multiple blunt impact injuries,” according to the Orange County medical examiner.

The coaster has remained closed since that heartbreaking day. Behind the scenes, investigations, legal statements, and internal reviews have painted a complex picture of a ride that, by all official accounts, functioned properly—and yet claimed a life. Now, as Universal prepares to reopen the attraction, many are questioning whether the park is prioritizing transparency and guest safety—or rushing to restore public confidence.

Before diving into the controversy surrounding Universal’s newest safety measures, here’s what we know about the incident, the investigation, and what’s changing for guests moving forward.

The Tragic Death That Shook Epic Universe

According to Universal Orlando, a full technical and operational review of Stardust Racers was conducted in partnership with local and state officials, as well as the ride’s manufacturer and a third-party coaster engineer. All reports found the attraction was “functioning as designed.”

That statement, however, hasn’t eased the pain—or suspicion—of Zavala’s family. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family, has been vocal in demanding a full and transparent investigation.

“Reopening the ride before our experts can examine every component is a grave risk to public safety,” Crump said. “If Universal is correct that the ride functioned as intended, then the design itself is deadly.”

Crump also revealed that other riders have since reported injuries consistent with Zavala’s, including problems with restraints and riders being thrown forward. He argues these reports point to systemic design issues rather than isolated incidents.

Universal’s Internal Review and Policy Changes

In a letter to employees, Universal emphasized that it has taken extra precautions since the tragedy. The company confirmed updates to operational procedures and revised safety signage across several attractions.

However, a major change has drawn widespread attention: new mobility restrictions on Stardust Racers and two other Epic Universe attractionsDragon Racer’s Rally and Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment.

Under the updated policy, guests using wheelchairs or other mobility devices must now walk independently to board these rides. Previously, Universal allowed guests to transfer into ride vehicles with minor assistance from a companion or team member.

This revision has sparked backlash among disability advocates and longtime fans, who say it unfairly excludes guests with mobility limitations.

“In these cases, notice or advice to the rider is important,” said personal injury attorney Luis Toribio, who is unaffiliated with the case. “The real question is whether a reasonable person would have chosen to ride given the warnings and requirements in place.”

Accessibility Fallout and Industry Implications

While Universal’s decision may be intended to prevent future accidents, critics argue it sends the wrong message about accessibility and inclusion. Instead of re-engineering restraints or improving transfer safety, the company’s new policy effectively prevents certain guests from experiencing its most anticipated attractions.

For many, it’s a painful reminder of the balance theme parks must strike between innovation, thrill, and responsibility. Theme park experts say that accessibility should evolve alongside safety—not be sacrificed because of it.

Zavala’s parents, Carlos Rodriguez Ortiz and Ana Zavala, expressed their dismay over the rapid decision to reopen.
“By rushing to reopen this ride as if nothing happened, Universal is showing great disregard for Kevin’s life, our family’s pain, and the safety of every rider,” they said.

Legal experts note that reopening less than three weeks after the fatality could play both ways in court: a demonstration of confidence in safety protocols—or evidence of haste.

Why Fans Are Divided

For many theme park enthusiasts, Universal represents imagination and innovation—but incidents like this cast long shadows. The emotional impact of Zavala’s death, combined with the debate over disability access, has left the fan community deeply divided.

As discussions continue to surge across social media, one question echoes through the fandom: Is Universal truly making rides safer—or just safer for the company?

Until a full investigation is completed and more transparency is provided, the Stardust Racers tragedy will remain a sobering reminder that even in the pursuit of excitement, safety and inclusion must never be afterthoughts.
