‘Harry Potter’ Reboot Rocked by Security Threats Linked to J.K. Rowling Controversy

HBO’s Harry Potter television reboot has reportedly increased its on-site security following a recent breach at Leavesden Studios, where the upcoming series is currently in production.

According to U.K. tabloid The Sun, unauthorized individuals gained access to the partially constructed Diagon Alley set earlier this month and later posted photos of the build online. The incident prompted an internal investigation at Leavesden — long the home of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts film franchises — and led to enhanced security protocols across the site.

While studio trespassing has been an occasional issue at high-profile productions, the situation has been compounded by growing concerns over planned protests related to Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling’s ongoing public disputes over gender identity. The Sun also reports that trans rights activists have discussed potential demonstrations at upcoming location shoots in Yorkshire, though no disruptions have yet occurred.

An unnamed production source told the outlet that the incident “sparked a major review of security” and that precautions have been strengthened ahead of extended filming. “The series won’t air until 2027,” the source said, noting that the length of the shoot leaves plenty of time for things to be “disrupted, damaged, or leaked.”

Production recently filmed scenes in Cornwall, where actor John Lithgow — who portrays Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming series — was photographed on set. The series is next expected to shoot in Skipton, North Yorkshire.

The new Harry Potter adaptation is the first in a decade-long reimagining of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling novels for HBO and Max. Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials) serves as writer and showrunner, with Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films, executive producing. Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones) will also direct multiple episodes.

The ensemble cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, alongside Lithgow, Nick Frost, Janet McTeer, Paul Whitehouse, Katherine Parkinson, and several others.

The production challenges come amid renewed public debate over Rowling’s comments on gender identity, as well as cast members — including Emma Watson — addressing their strained relationships with the author.

Harry Potter is expected to premiere on HBO in 2027.
