Lucasfilm Makes Course-Correction for ‘Star Wars’ in Latest Announcement

Lucasfilm’s newest project may not be a movie or a live-action series, but it might be a step in the right direction for a franchise that’s struggled to find its footing over the years.

The announcement of “Star Wars: Eyes Like Stars”, a young adult novel by New York Times bestselling author Ashley Poston, marks a clear effort to embrace genre again — something the saga used to do effortlessly.

Set a year and a half before The Force Awakens, the new story follows two original characters on a journey that mixes romance, mystery, and danger with the First Order. Revealed during NYCC's Lucasfilm Publishing panel via StarWars.com, “Eyes Like Stars” positions itself as a love story first — a notable shift for a brand that’s spent the last decade wrapped in science fiction space opera action.

It’s a small but promising change. Star Wars has always borrowed from every corner of pop culture storytelling — pulp adventure, westerns, samurai epics, political thrillers — and has somehow made them all fit under one galactic roof. But in recent years, that range has narrowed.

The films and Disney+ series have leaned heavily into grounded, brooding drama. While Andor and Rogue One are technical achievements, they’ve also been some of the bleakest chapters in the franchise. Even the animated shows occasionally confuse weight with meaning.

“Eyes Like Stars”, however, suggests that Lucasfilm remembers what makes this universe work. Han and Leia’s bickering affection in the original trilogy helped humanize the fantasy. Letting romance take the lead — at least in one corner of the galaxy — could remind creators and fans alike that Star Wars thrives when it plays with genre rather than avoiding it.

After years of mixed responses to projects like The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Mandalorian Season 3, Ahsoka, and The Acolyte, Lucasfilm seems to be experimenting again — and that’s healthy. A romantic adventure might not be what everyone expected, but it’s proof that Star Wars can still surprise fans without forgetting how to have fun.
