‘The Mandalorian’ Drops Several Beloved Characters in Addition to Cara Dune

Lucasfilm has officially unveiled the trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu, the first Star Wars theatrical release since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Arriving May 22, 2026, the movie breaks new ground as the first big-screen adaptation of a Disney+ series.

Though some suspected it would simply replace a fourth season of The Mandalorian, the footage points to something bigger: a continuation that could act as a reset for the franchise’s future. The story picks up where Season 3 left off. Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) pledges himself to the New Republic, helping chase down the remnants of the Empire.

Who’s Missing—and Why That Matters

The trailer doesn’t feature several mainstays, though: Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), The Armorer (Emily Swallow), Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris), IG-11 (Taika Waititi), or Bo-Katan Kryze. Even Gina Carano’s Cara Dune—once lined up for her own spinoff—remains absent, despite Carano recently settling her wrongful termination lawsuit with Disney.

Dune had already been written out of the story, with Greef Karga telling Din Djarin in Season 3 that she was “recruited by special forces.” That line closed the door on her active role, and the canceled Rangers of the New Republic confirmed Lucasfilm was moving on.

Enter Sigourney Weaver

Instead, the movie welcomes a new leader. Sigourney Weaver, best known for her roles in Alien (1979) and Ghostbusters (1984), plays Colonel Ward, a former Rebel pilot who now commands the Adelphi Rangers. In the trailer, Ward is seen across the table from Din and Grogu, seemingly commissioning them for a mission.

Weaver’s character fills the gap once earmarked for Dune, but she isn’t the only potential surprise.

The Bigger Cameo Question

The Mandalorian has a track record of jaw-dropping guest appearances—none more famous than Luke Skywalker’s return in Season 2, with Mark Hamill reprising his role.

With much of the core supporting cast absent, it’s entirely possible the film will lean on the same tactic: deploying massive cameos to fuel excitement. Whether it’s another Luke Skywalker moment or an appearance from other legendary figures, The Mandalorian & Grogu seems primed to keep audiences guessing with high-profile reveals.

The official description for the upcoming film on StarWars.com reads:

“The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu (as himself).”

The Mandalorian & Grogu stars Sigourney Weaver (Ghostbusters), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), Jonny Coyne (The Nun), and Pedro Pascal (The Fantastic Four: First Steps). The film hits theaters May 22, 2026.
