Universal Orlando may not have confirmed anything yet, but recent developments make one thing clear: something big is happening behind the scenes.
And if the speculation holds true, we might be witnessing the return of Ghostbusters to Universal Studios Florida in a major way.
Permits Confirm a Massive Project Is Underway
In March 2025, Universal Orlando filed a detailed permit with the City of Orlando for a new structure at the site of Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit. That permit outlines a 39,036 square-foot, two-story facility that will include all the features necessary for a high-tech indoor attraction—mechanical systems, plumbing, chilled water, low voltage systems, and even fire suppression. That scale and complexity suggest much more than a temporary experience.
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is set to close permanently on August 18, 2025. Fans already knew a replacement was coming—but now, speculation is focused squarely on Ghostbusters.
The recent appearance of construction walls around the Ghostbusters Firehouse facade in the park’s New York section has added more fuel to the fire. These walls aren’t generic. They clearly reference a “restoration” project, which many fans see as a nod to a new Ghostbusters-branded attraction being built into or around that space.
That location also holds nostalgic significance: it was once home to the Ghostbusters Spooktacular stage show. Bringing the franchise back to life on that very same spot would be a clever nod to Universal’s past.
While no ride specifics have been confirmed, many believe the new build could be a spiritual sibling to the Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift coaster under construction in California. That ride features multiple launch points and both indoor and outdoor sections. A similar structure would be well-suited to Ghostbusters, which thrives on set pieces, ghost-chasing action, and supernatural encounters.
It’s also been speculated that the Firehouse facade could become the queue or preshow area, immersing guests in the world of the Ghostbusters before launching them into the ride experience.
Why the Timing Makes Sense
The Ghostbusters franchise has enjoyed a recent resurgence in popularity, thanks to new films that appeal to both longtime fans and younger audiences. With Universal pushing to refresh its ride lineup, a Ghostbusters attraction would inject both nostalgia and relevance into the park.
Additionally, this could serve as a replacement for the aging Fast & Furious: Supercharged attraction, which has received lukewarm responses since its debut. A fully reimagined Ghostbusters ride would be a crowd-pleaser and a smart pivot for Universal.
Final Thoughts
There’s still no official announcement, and until Universal says the word, everything remains speculative. But if the permits, construction walls, and fan theories are anything to go by, the Ghostbusters may soon be back in action—this time, in a ride that could rival the best of what Universal has to offer.
We’ll be watching closely. Because when there’s something new being built in the New York section of Universal Studios… you know exactly who we’re gonna call.
