Disney Makes Bold Move to Rival ‘Harry Potter’ Empire

Disney is making a power play that could redefine the fantasy film landscape. In a massive seven-figure deal, the company has acquired the rights to the bestselling Impossible Creatures series — a saga already being compared to the global phenomenon of Harry Potter.

A Major Bet on Fantasy

This acquisition isn’t just another addition to Disney’s portfolio. It’s a full-fledged push to build a new franchise from the ground up. Impossible Creatures, written by Katherine Rundell, has captured the hearts of readers around the world. Rundell became the first U.K. children’s author since J.K. Rowling to top the charts in both the U.S. and U.K. — a feat that instantly caught Disney’s attention.

Rundell will not only adapt the screenplay for the first films but will also work closely with the studio to shape the creative vision. Disney clearly isn’t just buying the rights; it’s building a long-term partnership.

Inside the World of Impossible Creatures

The series centers on Christopher, a boy who discovers the hidden Glimouria Archipelago, where magical creatures have lived for thousands of years. Alongside a mysterious girl named Mal, he races to uncover why the magic in this world is fading.

Two books are already out, and three more are on the way — setting the perfect stage for multiple blockbuster films. With over a million copies sold globally, the series has all the makings of a fantasy juggernaut.

A Strategic Franchise Move

Disney CEO Bob Iger has described Impossible Creatures as “a story meant for Disney.” His enthusiasm mirrors a broader strategy: build original franchises that can anchor not just films, but streaming, merchandise, and even theme park experiences.

It’s a strategy that mirrors what Warner Bros. Pictures accomplished with Harry Potter — except this time, Disney will have full creative control.

Setting the Stage for the Next Big Thing

For years, Disney has dominated the animation and superhero worlds. Now, it’s aiming to plant its flag in fantasy. This move signals the beginning of what could become one of its most ambitious projects yet.

There’s no release date yet, but fans are already speculating about when they’ll see Glimouria on the big screen. If this plays out the way Disney hopes, the next big magical empire may belong to the House of Mouse.

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
