The Goonies Are Back! Sequel Confirmed and Coming Soon!

“Goonies never say die!”

That iconic line from The Goonies (1985) continues to ring true for fans nearly 40 years later. It’s hard to believe that nearly four decades have passed since Mikey (Sean Astin), Mouth (Corey Feldman), Data (Ke Huy Quan), and Chunk (Jeff Cohen) embarked on an unforgettable adventure to find the legendary treasure of pirate One-Eyed Willy.

Back in Astoria, Oregon, the Goonies—just a group of kids trying to save their homes from being torn down to make way for a country club—found themselves facing off against the dangerous Fratelli crime family.

What started as a fight to keep their childhood homes turned into a thrilling treasure hunt that would become one of the most beloved films in cinematic history.

The 1985 classic follows Mikey, the group’s optimistic leader, as he convinces his friends to go on a wild journey in search of One-Eyed Willy’s treasure, believing it could save their homes. With every twist and turn, the Goonies face perilous challenges, but in the end, their friendship and quick thinking save the day, with Mikey sneaking away some precious gold to secure the future of their community.

In addition to Astin and Feldman, the film featured Josh Brolin as Mikey’s older brother, Brand; Kerri Green as Andy, Brand’s crush; and Martha Plimpton as Stef, Andy’s best friend.

A Sequel Nearly 40 Years in the Making

Now, after nearly four decades of fan requests, rumors, and speculation, The Goonies is officially getting a sequel! Warner Bros. made the exciting announcement on February 14, 2023, confirming that the much-anticipated follow-up to the beloved classic is finally in the works.

The announcement has left fans buzzing with excitement, with many wondering what the next chapter in the Goonies’ story will look like.

The sequel will be written by Potsy Ponciroli, known for his work on the TV series Still The King. This marks a major step toward bringing the adventure back to the big screen.

In addition to Ponciroli’s involvement, Steven Spielberg, who wrote the story for the original film (though he didn’t direct it), will return as a producer for the sequel, further assuring fans that the magic of the original film will be preserved.

In a statement, Warner Bros. confirmed:

Warner Bros. has hired Potsy Ponciroli to write the script for the sequel, it was announced Friday — almost 40 years after the original movie hit theaters back in 1985. Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin Entertainment alongside Chris Columbus, who wrote the original “Goonies” script. Lauren Shuler Donner will executive produce. There is no director attached to the sequel yet, and there are no plot details revealed yet.

Will the Original Cast Return?

One of the biggest questions surrounding the sequel is whether the original cast will reprise their roles. While Warner Bros. has not confirmed the return of any of the original actors, several cast members have expressed interest in returning to the franchise.

Ke Huy Quan, who portrayed the gadget-obsessed Data, shared his excitement for the possibility of a sequel, stating that he’s constantly asked by fans if he’d like to return. “I would love for it to happen,” Quan said, highlighting his enthusiasm for once again joining his fellow Goonies for another adventure.

Corey Feldman, who played the wise-cracking Mouth, also weighed in, offering an optimistic view on the prospect of reuniting with his co-stars. “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die…There’s hope.”

In the past, there were rumors circulating about the possibility of most of the original cast returning, but those were unconfirmed.

Back in September, The Sun reported that the sequel was in the works and that most of the original cast would return. However, that rumor was never confirmed, leading some to believe a sequel might not happen at all. But with the official announcement, it’s clear that the Goonies’ treasure hunt isn’t over just yet.

Where Are the Goonies Now?

The cast members of The Goonies have gone on to have successful careers in Hollywood, with many becoming household names in the years since their time in Astoria. Sean Astin’s role as Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings trilogy earned him a spot in cinematic history, and his role as Bob in Stranger Things also proved his enduring appeal.

Ke Huy Quan, who took a step back from acting after The Goonies, made a major comeback in 2021 with his award-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Since then, he’s appeared in several high-profile projects, including American Born Chinese and Loki on Disney+.

Josh Brolin, who played Brand, has had a successful career in a wide range of roles, with his portrayal of Thanos in the Avengers franchise being one of his most iconic performances. Brolin’s success has solidified him as a Hollywood powerhouse, and his involvement in a Goonies sequel would certainly add star power to the project.

As the project develops, we’ll be keeping a close eye on updates about the cast, plot, and any additional details about what promises to be one of the most highly anticipated sequels of all time.
