Fans Shocked as Epic Universe Turns Monster Land Into Cornhole Central

Universal’s new park just pulled off a move no one saw coming—and not in a good way. The heart of Epic Universe’s Dark Universe, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, went down unexpectedly this week. Instead of eerie fog and thunder, guests were greeted with something that felt more like a backyard barbecue.

Horror Meets Lawn Games

On October 28, visitors arrived to find Frankenstein Manor eerily quiet—except for the sound of beanbags thudding onto wooden boards. Universal Team Members had set up a makeshift game of cornhole right outside the attraction.

Coaster101 confirmed that the ride would remain closed all day, and Universal’s own app backed it up. Photos quickly spread online, showing guests casually tossing beanbags under towering gothic spires meant to summon the horrors of the Universal Monsters universe. The surreal image had fans laughing, cringing, and shaking their heads all at once.

One guest posted, “I came to see Frankenstein’s monster, not play in a parking lot.” Another joked, “Universal’s new attraction: Cornhole Unchained.”

Growing Pains for Epic Universe

The incident adds to a growing list of issues plaguing Epic Universe’s first year. Between long lines, ride breakdowns, and visible construction work, many fans say the park still feels unfinished. Monsters Unchained was supposed to be the centerpiece of the Dark Universe—a massive dark ride blending animatronics and projection technology. Instead, it’s now the butt of internet jokes.

Universal’s goal with Epic Universe was to create a seamless, immersive experience across multiple worlds. But when something like this happens, it breaks that illusion completely. The hauntingly detailed sets and gothic atmosphere lose their power when guests are distracted by a game you could find at a backyard party.

An Unplanned Comedy of Errors

While there’s no official explanation yet for why the ride went down, fans are hoping this isn’t a recurring issue. Technical difficulties are expected with new attractions, but throwing together cornhole boards as a temporary distraction was, well, a choice.

It’s moments like these that show just how quickly a world-class park can become a viral talking point. Epic Universe’s Dark Universe is supposed to terrify guests with creatures from the shadows—but for now, the only thing scary about it is how fast the memes are spreading.
