Marvel’s 10-year Daredevil History

Daredevil has always been a superhero outlier. From its gritty, street-level beginnings on Netflix (2015–2018) to its latest incarnation on Disney+, the series has constantly evolved. The original show captured audiences with intense fight sequences, deep character work, and a grounded tone that stood out in the broader Marvel universe.

Its cancellation in 2018 shocked fans. Reports suggest Netflix pulled the plug due to production costs, licensing headaches, and Disney’s ambitions to launch its own streaming service.

By 2022, Marvel regained the rights and began reintegrating Daredevil characters into the MCU. Charlie Cox reprised his role as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), while Vincent D’Onofrio returned as Kingpin in Hawkeye, hinting that a bigger return was on the way.

This led to Daredevil: Born Again, announced in 2022 as a hybrid reboot and continuation. But production faced delays thanks to the 2023 Writers’ Strike. Marvel used the pause to revamp the project, replacing the writers and directors, shifting the series’ tone closer to the original Netflix style, and revising the original 18-episode plan to two nine-episode seasons.

New scripts were written, a fresh pilot shot, and fan-favorite cast members Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson returned as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson. Even the previously recast Vanessa Fisk was restored to maintain continuity.

Born Again debuted in March 2025, set after the events of the Netflix finale. Retired and trying to stay out of the game, Matt is pulled back into danger as Wilson Fisk climbs New York’s political ladder. The series keeps the mature crime-drama edge fans loved, while firmly embedding Daredevil in the MCU—a mix of nostalgia and forward momentum that has made it one of Marvel’s most talked-about streaming events.

Marvel Reboots the “Daredevil” Series Again

Alongside Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel Comics is offering a bold new take on the Man Without Fear. The upcoming series is billed as a fresh start that will “redefine” Daredevil.

“Following in the footsteps of legendary creative teams from the title’s esteemed history, [Stephanie Phillips] and [Lee Garbett] set out to redefine Daredevil for a new age!” Marvel writes. “A fresh start that’s perfect for newcomers and longtime fans alike, the new run sees Matt Murdock confront unprecedented challenges—both in his personal life as Matt Murdock and on the dangerous streets of Hell’s Kitchen as Daredevil.”

The reboot also sees Matt returning to academia. “Matt will go back to school, taking on a new role as a law professor just as a new super villain named Omen emerges with a mysterious vendetta against his super hero alter ego,” Marvel added.

Stephanie Phillips reflected on collaborating with Lee Garbett: “I'm taking on one of my favorite characters with one of my favorite artists, and together we're exploring Daredevil's noir sensibilities […] Lee Garbett brings so much style and emotion to every page, and I couldn't ask for a better partner to bring this version of Daredevil to life.”

Described as “an all-new era of Daredevil” and a version of the hero “never seen before,” “Daredevil #1” will hit shelves on March 18, 2026. Disney+ subscribers won’t have to wait long: Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again premieres March 4, 2026. And fans can expect more, as Disney and Marvel confirmed a third season is in development as of September 2025.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
