‘Power Rangers’ Franchise Gets Confirmed TV Reboot, Could Lead to Disney Parks Experiences

The Power Rangers franchise is heading back to Disney, with Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz developing a reboot series for Disney+. Steinberg recently confirmed the news in an interview with Movieweb, stating, “The rumor is true. I can not tell you, but I am very, very excited for that story.”

Power Rangers is currently owned by Hasbro, but the IP was previously under Disney during the 2000s before Saban later reacquired the property.

Now that it's returning to Disney via its popular streaming service, it's interesting to wonder how much the company will lean into the brand if the reboot is a success.

One possibility is Disney Parks, where the color-coded superheroes once had a presence during the property’s earlier Disney ownership. If the upcoming reboot becomes a breakout hit for Disney+, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Power Rangers return to the theme park setting in some shape or form, whether in meet-and-greets or even an attraction.

There's also the question of its success on the screen. For years, Power Rangers has been treated mostly as a TV property, but Lionsgate previously attempted a cinematic universe with the 2017 Power Rangers reboot. While that film was positively received by audiences and critics, box-office results swiftly ended plans for a bigger franchise with multiple sequels.

With Disney holding the streaming platform and Hasbro in control of merchandising, the pieces exist for a broader universe if the reboot finds the right tone and audience.

For now, all we know is that Steinberg and Shotz are developing a new series for Disney+, so we'll just have to wait for more news from Disney and Hasbro. Either way, it's an exciting time to be a fan one of the most nostalgic properties from the '90s.
