When The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters next spring, it won’t just be Star Wars’ return to cinemas—it will be a recalibration of one of the franchise’s most successful modern formulas.

Slated for release on May 22, 2026, the film marks the first theatrical outing built directly from a Disney+ series. While Din Djarin and Grogu remain the marquee names, everything about the project suggests Lucasfilm is using the movie to stretch the boundaries of what The Mandalorian can be.
From the beginning, the series thrived on intimacy: a lone warrior, a mysterious child, and a bond that slowly took shape against a backdrop of bounty hunting and frontier justice. That relationship powered three seasons and helped restore faith in televised Star Wars. The film, however, appears designed to test whether that dynamic can evolve without losing its emotional pull.

Jon Favreau once again sits in the director’s chair, joined by Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, and Ian Bryce. Ludwig Göransson’s return maintains continuity, while new cast additions—including Sigourney Weaver—underscore the project’s cinematic ambitions.
The story remains set between 1983's Star Wars: Episode VI–Return of the Jedi and 2015's Star Wars: Episode VII–The Force Awakens, but the narrative spotlight widens considerably with the introduction of Rotta the Hutt. Once known only as Jabba’s infant son in The Clone Wars, Rotta now enters live action as an adult, played by Jeremy Allen White.

White has described Rotta as a central presence rather than a novelty. Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, he revealed that his character spends much of the film alongside Din Djarin, a pairing that hints at a storyline running parallel to Grogu’s.
White discussed joining the project in detail with Variety.
“I’ve been a fan of Jon Favreau’s for a very long time,” telling Variety. “Swingers and Made had a tremendous effect on me as a young man, a young actor. We met at a party. I told him that, and he was like, ‘I have something I want to talk to you about. Can I call you?' It was the next day, and he was talking about Mandalorian, and I said, ‘It’s a great show. You do a great job. I’d known Pedro Pascal for a little bit, and he’s great and has fun on it, and he loves you.' He was like, ‘I want you to be in it.'”

“Fantastic, of course. And then he started explaining it and started talking about Rotta. I’d never done voice work. There isn’t any stop-motion work or anything physical like that,” the Shameless star confirmed. “I was excited about doing a job that is in this world of Star Wars, a world that I have admired for a very long time.”
Trailer footage released so far has quietly reframed expectations. Din and Grogu are not always shown together, suggesting that Grogu’s arc unfolds separately while Din becomes entangled in a mission involving Rotta. Central to that plot appears to be a gladiator-style arena, where Rotta plays a major role.
The arena imagery, paired with Rotta’s criminal lineage, points toward deeper exploration of the galaxy’s underworld. With the Empire fallen and the New Republic still consolidating power, the Hutts represent lingering chaos—and Rotta may embody both inheritance and rebellion within that system.

Not everyone is convinced. For fans who see Grogu as the heart of the series, any shift away from that relationship is bound to raise concerns. Others view the change as a necessary step for a story making the leap to theaters.
Lucasfilm seems ready to clarify its intent with the next trailer, reportedly set to debut in theaters next week.

According to the description, the preview balances familiar character beats with spectacle, using a quiet Din-and-Grogu moment as a gateway into a larger action showcase. The extended look at Rotta is expected to finally define who he is in this era—and how far removed he is from the helpless child fans remember.
The trailer also reportedly includes additional action from Zeb Orrelios, reinforcing the film’s ties to the wider animated canon and signaling a scope beyond what the series typically attempted.
Despite its cinematic scale, the film is not a farewell. Favreau has confirmed that The Mandalorian has the potential to return to Disney+.

“We were planning on doing a fourth season,” Favreau said in a recent Empire Magazine interview. “I had actually written all of that. I still have Season 4 sitting on my desk here.” He added, “It’s structured around a movie structure as opposed to a serialized weekly television show. So there’s a larger throw to the whole thing.”
That framing positions The Mandalorian and Grogu as a pivot point rather than an endpoint. Its reception could influence how Star Wars balances long-form streaming narratives with theatrical storytelling in the years ahead.
As the release date approaches, one thing is clear: Grogu is still part of the journey, but the road ahead for Din Djarin looks more complicated than ever. In a franchise defined by constant reinvention, that alone ensures all eyes will be on May 22, 2026.
