Visitors to Dolly Parton's Tennessee theme park received unexpected news on Saturday when Dollywood announced the immediate closure of one of its signature experiences. The shutdown impacts a cornerstone element of the Great Smoky Mountain destination, which has welcomed guests for more than six decades.
Official Statement Released Saturday

Dollywood issued an official communication through its Instagram story on December 20, informing guests about the operational halt. The announcement detailed the sudden and “unscheduled” unavailability of the Dollywood Express and apologized for the disruption to visitor plans.
“PARK UPDATE
The Dollywood Express is not currently operating due to unscheduled maintenance. We are sorry for the inconvenience. We hope you will enjoy all of Dollywood's other award-winning rides and attractions during Smoky Mountain Christmas.”

The theme park subsequently modified its official website to reflect the current operational status, ensuring guests checking digital resources would have accurate information before arriving at the Pigeon Forge destination.
Legacy of the Dollywood Express
The Dollywood Express is one of the most historically significant experiences at the Tennessee entertainment complex, with roots extending well before Dolly Parton's involvement with the property. The steam-powered heritage railway first opened to passengers in 1961 under the name Rebel Railroad, establishing a tradition that would span multiple ownership transitions and rebranding efforts.
Gold Rush Junction emerged as the new identity in 1966, lasting four years before the Cleveland Browns football organization acquired the property in 1970. In 1976, Silver Dollar City took over, positioning the railway as the flagship element of their Smoky Mountain venture. The property operated as Silver Dollar City Tennessee for a decade.

In 1986, Dolly Parton acquired Silver Dollar City Tennessee, renaming both the park and its historic railway. Dollywood and the Dollywood Express have operated under these names for nearly four decades.
Timeline for Reopening
The Great Smoky Mountain theme park has not said when the Dollywood Express Train Ride will reopen. The attraction most recently underwent planned maintenance during the summer of 2025. Whether the current unscheduled shutdown is related to issues addressed during the previous closure remains unclear.

Dolly Parton didn’t acquire Silver Dollar City Tennessee. Instead, she partnered with the company that owned the park and invested in it. In 1986, Dolly Parton became a co-owner of the theme park, which was then known as Silver Dollar City Tennessee.
