Disney Forced To Shut Down Spaceship Earth After Unprecedented Guest Action

Spaceship Earth was temporarily closed last week after a guest exited her ride vehicle during the attraction.

Located inside the park’s geodesic sphere near the entrance, the attraction was taken offline after a guest exited her ride vehicle while the attraction was operating. The closure occurred during evening hours, when wait times often remain elevated.

The slow-moving dark ride is typically among EPCOT’s most reliable attractions and frequently serves as a final stop for guests before leaving the park. Because of its capacity and location, even brief interruptions can affect a significant number of visitors.

Spaceship Earth opened in 1982 and traces the history of human communication, moving riders through scenes depicting early storytelling, written language, printing, and modern technology. Over the decades, updates have largely focused on narration rather than ride mechanics.

Narrators have included Jeremy Irons and Judi Dench. A more extensive refurbishment was announced in 2019 as part of EPCOT’s broader transformation, but that project was later canceled.

Despite the canceled renovation, Spaceship Earth continues to draw steady crowds, particularly during seasonal events such as Festival of the Holidays.

Guest Exits Ride Vehicle, Causing Closure

According to a guest account shared online, the disruption began when a rider exited her vehicle mid-attraction.

“According to the cast member, she was just suddenly like OK, I’m done, and then tried to walk off,” the guest wrote on Reddit.

The post stated the guest later addressed others after exiting the attraction. “We saw her come out and she said ‘don’t get off the ride or they’ll kick you off’ like she was in the right for doing that.”

As required by safety procedures, cast members stopped the ride and closed the attraction while conducting an inspection.

Guests reported that Spaceship Earth remained closed for more than 30 minutes.

For some visitors, the delay meant missing the attraction entirely.

“We ended up not getting to ride because we needed to get home, and it was gonna be our last ride of the night, one of my favorites, but she ruined it,” the guest added.

Safety Procedures and Prior Incidents at Disney

Exiting a ride vehicle without authorization is treated as a safety issue across Disney parks. Even slow-moving attractions rely on automated systems that require uninterrupted operation.

Spaceship Earth includes elevated track sections and enclosed show spaces. When a guest exits a vehicle, cast members must halt operations and verify that systems remain safe before reopening.

Similar incidents have occurred on other attractions.

In 1999, a 5-year-old boy was seriously injured after exiting a moving ride vehicle. He broke his leg and suffered additional injuries, undergoing several hours of surgery to repair a wound near his shin, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

More recently, in 2025, a guest exited a log vehicle on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure during a temporary pause. “Shout out to this guy, who held up everyone on Tiana’s for 30-40 minutes because he and his son jumped out of their log,” a witness wrote on Reddit.

In 2024, another guest exited Big Thunder Mountain Railroad while the train was climbing a hill, prompting an emergency stop and evacuation.

Beyond guests behaving badly, other incidents at Disney World in recent months include a rubber boulder that rolled off course during Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, knocking down and injuring a brave cast member who shielded the audience.
