Disney Animatronic Goes Haywire, Guests Evacuated From Attraction

Disney has long been renowned for its advanced audio-animatronics, though even the most sophisticated systems occasionally fall short.

From early figures like Pirates of the Caribbean to cutting-edge creations found across Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort, and beyond, audio-animatronics remain a cornerstone of Disney’s theme park identity. These figures are designed to move fluidly, sync precisely with audio, and operate reliably across thousands of daily performances.

Some of Disney’s most complex animatronics can be found in attractions such as Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Na'vi River Journey, and Pirates of the Caribbean, where advanced robotics are paired with lighting, projection, and show control systems.

Soon, guests will also be able to encounter an impressive walking, talking Olaf animatronic in World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland and Walt Disney Studios Park (which will be renamed Disney Adventure World upon the land's opening in March).

One of the longest-running showcases of this technology sits in Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom. The Hall of Presidents features a full roster of U.S. presidents represented by audio-animatronic figures, some of which have been updated over the decades (including Donald Trump, who received a makeover before debuting for his second term amid rumors that he was originally made from a repurposed Hillary Clinton animatronic).

That reputation came into focus on New Year’s Eve, when guests attending a performance of the attraction witnessed an apparent malfunction during the show’s finale.

George Washington Animatronic Malfunctions at Disney World

A video posted on TikTok by user @kristle-golden shows the George Washington figure bending forward as if to bow to the audience.

Instead of completing the movement, the animatronic stops abruptly while bent over.

The clip also suggests that Washington’s facial expressions appeared frozen prior to the movement halting, indicating the issue may not have been limited to a single motion cue.

After several seconds, the theater lights came on, interrupting the presentation. A cast member then advised guests to exit the Liberty Square attraction, effectively ending the performance early.

The video ends shortly after guests are instructed to leave, and it remains unclear what occurred once the theater was cleared.

Disney has not issued a public statement addressing the malfunction, and no official details have been released regarding the cause.

While unexpected, such stoppages are not unheard of. Disney attractions are equipped with automated safety systems that can halt a show if irregular movement or technical issues are detected, often as a precaution to protect both guests and equipment.

A similar incident occurred at the Hall of Presidents in 2022 when one of the president animatronics started shaking uncontrollably.

It is unclear whether the George Washington animatronic required repairs or whether The Hall of Presidents experienced any extended downtime following the New Year’s Eve incident.
