Report Claims Marvel May Release a New MCU Trilogy Starting This Year

Marvel Studios is preparing to reintroduce its most iconic team at a moment when the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe feels more uncertain than it has in years. The upcoming fifth Avengers film marks the franchise’s attempt to recapture the sense of scale and cohesion that once defined its storytelling.

The MCU’s dominance throughout the 2010s set expectations that few franchises could ever hope to meet. Yet the years following Avengers: Endgame have delivered a mixed track record. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) reminded audiences of the brand’s global pull, while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and Captain America: Brave New World (2025) struggled to generate the same cultural impact.

Over the last five years, Marvel Studios has faced mounting questions about momentum, audience fatigue, and the franchise’s long-term direction.

In response, Marvel is turning back to a familiar creative force. Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors behind Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), have signed on to guide Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has described the films as a course correction, designed to reshape the MCU rather than simply extend it.

The scope of Doomsday reflects that ambition. Established MCU heroes such as Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Sam Wilson’s (Anthony Mackie) Captain America will appear alongside characters previously confined to other cinematic universes. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen’s return as Professor X and Magneto brings the legacy X-Men films directly into Marvel Studios’ continuity, reinforcing the Multiverse as the saga’s backbone.

Even with that ensemble, the most headline-grabbing development is Robert Downey Jr.’s return. After defining the MCU as Tony Stark, Downey will portray Victor Von Doom in Phase Six. Doctor Doom is one of Marvel Comics’ most complex antagonists, and this version appears to lean into that reputation.

The character’s introduction was teased in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), and early discussion suggests Doom will not be positioned as a simple enemy. Instead, he may function as a morally conflicted figure whose goals place him in opposition to the Avengers. A popular theory circulating among fans points to Doom pursuing Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), blaming him for the destructive fallout caused by the events of Endgame.

Marvel Studios has also reworked its theatrical rollout. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars have been moved from their original May release dates to December 2026 and December 2027. The decision aligns the films with Disney’s holiday strategy, especially after the success of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which premiered last December and crossed the $1 billion mark this month.

That may not be the only structural change. Reports suggest Secret Wars could grow into a two-part event, extending Marvel’s Avengers slate beyond what was originally planned.

The Hot Mic reports that Doomsday could run close to three hours, and that Marvel Studios is actively weighing whether Secret Wars should be expanded into multiple films. Doing so would allow the studio to more fully explore the Multiverse and set the stage for the MCU’s next saga. If approved, this approach could turn the Multiverse Saga into a trilogy of Avengers-scale releases.

Narratively, the stakes are expected to be severe. Persistent rumors indicate that Doomsday may feature the deaths of several long-established heroes, reshaping the MCU’s roster moving forward.

Complicating matters further, at least one original Avengers actor has publicly stated they will not appear in Doomsday, leaving uncertainty around which legacy characters will return for the franchise’s next chapter.

With speculation that the Russo Brothers could remain involved with Marvel Studios after Secret Wars—either behind the camera or in an advisory role—the Avengers’ return may represent not an ending, but the foundation for Marvel’s next reinvention.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
